Dont do it. Bad house wine, Antipasto was bit rough, mostly out of a tin, nothing freshly made, bread slightly burnt. S&P Squid floury, clams minimal. Sometimes you wish you had just stayed home for baked beans on toast. Tonight was that night.
I went with a group today – for a roast lunch. Firstly the meal was very slow coming with one waiter most of the time serving about 50 people. Not on – there probably should have been 3 or 4 serving the food. By the time the first people were served the last were just getting their meals. Also the food was cold. The potatoes were very shriveled up – as though they had been cooked days ago – also some you could hardly put a knife thru.We were dished up ham and beef. Some people got 2 sauces and some got 3 but no gravy. In my eyes apple sauce should be served with pork, not with beef or ham.One lady couldn’t even cut her beef so went and asked for a replacement – she didn’t even get an apology. The desert was equally as appalling.Everyone got the same – pavlova, cream and tinned mixed fruit. Some got very little fruit salad and some got heaps. The same went for the pavlova. In my mind they should be all the same size – isn’t that how restaurants work. Your presentation of the food is just not impressive enough. I personally won’t be coming back here in a hurry.Elaine
I have been going to the Salty Dog Inn for many years now & have dined in the restaurant many times. Tonight I took my son for a special mummy, son date night. It could not have been lovelier the staff always make you feel so welcome & the food is delicious & so filling. We will definitely be back
To the Salty Dog owner. We dined at the Salty Dog last night 01/01/14 when we arrived one of your waitresses was sitting down on the outside deck playing with a dog (hope she washed her hands afterwards). We ordered dinner and sat outside on the deck. The food was great and well presented no complaints there.BUT there where people there and the language was disgusting as we had two small children and there parents that were visiting plus they had a dog just walking around freely and when our dinner arrived it kept coming over to our table and the owners did nothing. Dogs should not be there unless they are kept tied up somewhere and under control so people can enjoy their meals.
We visited Salty Dog Inn as a family for dinner a few days ago. The entrees were ok at best a beef salad and shrimp cocktail. However the mains were appalling. My partner had the fish of the day. Snapper risotto (menu sells it a lot better). Well the Risotto had the life cooked out of it and was dry tasteless muck to say the least. As for the fish? It is a sad sad day when a chef cannot cook a piece of fish correctly. Firstly it had a bad odour to it (which is not a good look, fish shouldn’t smell at all if it is fresh). And to say that it had been so over cooked would be an understatement. So dry and flavourless and an awful texture. It should never ever have left the kitchen. The pork fillet wasn’t much better, dry again with no flavour. all/any juices had been taken away by a total lack of understanding how to cook! Even one of my children complained about the lack of flavour in the macaroni cheese,i mean come on! However one had a pizza and enjoyed it..Sorry to the Salty crew i know that they are under new ownership but you really need to raise the bar dramatically especially in todays times. Also very expensive.Lastly my family were very cold and we heard a few other people complaining about how cold it was and why wasn’t the fire on.
We went to the Salty Dog after having missed a ferry and waiting for the next one. We only had half an hour to eat dinner. The waiters were excellent and recommended what could be readied fairly fast. The fish was fresh and the sizes generous. My husband and I shared a meal and they put it on separate plates for the two of us – each was a fair sized meal on its own. My friend had a seafood chowder entree which was packed with seafood and very hearty. Service was excellent.
The Salty has got progressively worse over the year. As locals we have been eating here regularly, but never again. The chinese buffet on a Monday is expensive and was not fresh and there was barely a vegetable in site. I would not recommend at all, in fact go to Matakana for mexican! We did come again after that but were generally disappointed and the prices are not cheap. Sorry Salty but not again for this family.
