My all-time fave Auckland cafe is Imperial Lane. Their coffee has kept me coming back for the last three years – it’s consistently excellent. The space is super-cool too – reminds me of Melbourne. They closed for a complete refurbishment a couple of weeks ago. Turns out, the place is now under entirely new management. Sadly, it’s not even a shadow of its former self. To be specific, their coffee is the worst I’ve ever had in the CBD: weak, insipid dishwater, devoid of any character. On my initial visit, I sent my first cup back. They said that their single-origin coffee does not achieve a crema. Apparently, it also does not achieve any flavour or depth. I put it down to teething problems and gave the place another go a week later. On my second visit, the long black they served up was possibly the saddest excuse for a coffee I’ve encountered in this caffeine-centric city. It actually made me mad to think they’ve ruined my special go-to place. Of course, I had paid prior to being served their awful coffee. Even before paying, their EFTPOS machine was asking me if I wanted to add a tip. Well, now I do. Here’s a tip for you: learn how to make a decent coffee FFS!
