Tucked away up a small lane across the road from the Auckland District Court is this seemingly innocuous Japanese lunch place. After having to navigate through a number of shifty looking tattooed types waiting for their convictions to be processed one comes across the small entrance to this nondescript restaurant. As you enter it opens up to something much larger than expected, but it still has the dim lights and slow music of a seedy nitespot, even full of middle aged guys furtively avoiding making eye contact. Of course the highlight is the food and service, and as is usually the case with Japanese restaurants, there is no complaint here. Get the daily special, more bang for buck.

Rakuten is a little Japanese place tucked around the corner of the Auckland High Court and was a lot classier with new furnishings than I expected! The sushi looks so good and fresh. They have such a wide selection too. However, I had the lunch special, which was sauce katsu that day for $10, which is quite cheap! The staff were friendly and the food was nice and very tasty. Japanese Mayo is just so yummy haha. No soggy vegetables. All very crisp and clean and fresh. It’s very nice and I wouldn’t mind going back there again!

Search out, find and be rewarded. Kingston Street is a small side street, Rakuten is tucked away a little. It’s an order at the till sort of place, but their daily $10 lunches are about the best value tastiest meals you can get in the CBD. Deep fried spicy chicken on rice (might be called a Spicy Chicken Katsu) on Fridays is a winner. Free green tea. Super tasty. Yum. Also do great sushi, and sell Japanese beer Suntory and real Asahi (not brewed in China or Australia). Service brisk but friendly. If going with a group try and get the big table in the semi-outdoors bit. It’s still warm in winter.

A Japanese eatery tucked in between the offices at Albert Street area that always seems busy during lunch, Rakuten is one of my favorite places for weekday lunches. I love how its spacious with simple dcor that worksbamboo, Japanese paintings, wooden tables. Service is quick and friendly but be prepared to queue to order when its busy; around 12-2 PM is their busiest period I reckon. They do really great sushi selections; try their aburi salmon and aburi tuna, theyre really tasty! What I love about their sushi is that they are fresh and filled generously with fillings. Their donburi and udon are delicious with options of regular and half size if youre not that hungrythey do daily donburi specials ($11) that consists of regular donburi and a side of miso soup. They also have bento boxes lunch menu set available. Hot and cold green tea are available for you, bottomless. Their food is always fresh and they are very generous with the portion in my opinion. If you happen to be in area do give Rakuten a trytoo bad they are closed at night and on weekends!

I have lunch at Rakuten often and always have sashimi. The sashimi is cut to order, very fresh and nicely garnished with various shredded vegetables, ginger, wasabi and soy. Friends who have eaten with me have had various Dons and have been pleased.Highly recommended in an area of town where it’s hard to find a good quality quick lunch.

Lunch is amazing here! Fresh, tasty and the variety is great!I found out it opened for dinner recently and tried it out straight away. Amazeballs!I’ve had half the menu so far and it’s been absolutely amazing! So many favourites, but I love the salmon lovers, pork belly, miso pork, karaage, salads are so good. Really nothing to fault. Service fantastic and very charming too!Love this place!

Wow! The food was delicious and the service was amazing. I have walked past a few times and decided to go for dinner. I feel lucky to know they are there now. Nice surroundings and ambiance. (they have just opened for dinner)I had the pork belly with kimchi and the banana fritters to die for!
