Decided to make my way to this place after driving past a few times. Walked through the shut door which made a pretty big noise. There was a old boy preping food he didn’t even realise I was waiting at the counter! After about 20 secs he walks over and I ordered a bbq pork luro riodo. Food came very quick. Basically its cooked noodles, no soup with some pickle, pork, spring onion, peanuts and soy sauce. I found noodles to be softer than I prefer. There chilli flakes for you to add, be careful, it’s really spicy and I like my spice. All in all good, cheap, quick anf fast. Will eat again
The noodles are good but the guy at the counter had a grumpy look on his face the entire time. Didn’t greet me when I walked up to him and no eye contact whatsoever. Literally the only words he said were ‘have here or take away?’. No hello no goodbye no $x please and not one smile it’s like he hates those noodles and doesn’t want to be there selling them. I want to go back for the noodles but don’t really want to see that guy again it’s a dilemma..
As a white guy I can hardly profess to be an expert on the subject of rice noodles. Having lived in the city for many years though – I’ve been made a lot more aware of them and with Riodo I have become an avowed fan.I tend to go for the noodle soup, though ‘dry’ noodle dishes are offered too. There are also Chinese burgers and fish and chips which I have never tried, but given the quality of the noodle soup I can hardly imagine they’re less than good. The noodle soup dishes are a wonderfully dense amalgam of flavours. There’s a herbaceous undertone to a rich freshly cooked stock flavour which is topped by excellent additions like fresh home-made pickles, peanuts, and other pointedly authentic touches like tripe and other kinds of offal. Don’t be put off, it all makes for a delicious combination. The pickles are also proudly fermenting on the counter-top – they look a bit like submerged roses! The overall effect is incredibly tasty, warming and hugely satisfying. Riodo is one of those new, very tiny, storefronts which have been recently developed around Queen Street. It’s not a great environment for dining in but it’s fine – and under the circumstances its shortcomings are totally understandable. On a superficial note, as soon as I walked in there and saw the chef I thought ‘this looks like a guy who knows what he’s doing.’ I’d say I’m right all the same, haha. Riodo might just be one of Auckland’s best kept secrets so far as noodles go.
The unique dish from South China the city called Guilin. very very original guilin style rice noodle. Big size tasty and warm in winter. Highly recommend
