A wonderful place opposite of Aotea Centre. It provides you with coffees in winter and ice creams in summer. The customer service is good. The Kapiti ice cream flavour they serve is amazing. It may give you a chance to try something new.
I went here on a Friday night in April 2015 with a friend from the US. The location is very central located just at the start of the upper part of Queen street. It is set slightly back from the main traffic way and this allows some street table seating. The shop itself is very small but that is not a distraction as the entire front is display and servery. I noticed the Kapiti name in their display and I know that this is excellent product so we decided to try something here. Unfortunately they only had a blackboard menu – no pictures so you could only guess at what you would be getting serving size but normally you have an idea of what a ‘scoop’ of icecream should look like. I ordered a double scoop of different flavours. The serving size was pathetic – a very small tub and the scoops were not scoops rather more scratchings and at $6.50 very poor value. I should have said something about this at the time but didn’t want to make a fuss in front of my overseas guest. The flavours of the icecream were very good what there was of it – I had honey fig and lemongrass ginger – very innovative and really nice. But the style wasn’t enough to outweigh the negative of lack of substance. I don’t think I am being unfair in my expectation as I compare it to what we got from a number of icecream bars in Melbourne – really nice flavours as well and 3 substantial scoops for $A5. You should check it out because in the experience of International travelers that is the competition and unfortunately right now you are not even close.
