Really enjoyed the food, and great service. Nice sunny room for lunch! The staff were friendly, and gave good advice about the menu. The coffee was very good, and not too weak. The food was prepared quickly and cooked to a high standard. Will definitely be going back soon.
My husband and I went to The Grill as a treat and boy were we impressed. I LOVED the duck liver parfait – could have had that as main meal and would have been very satisfied. Then had the Wagyu Rump for mains with the duck fat chips (so naughty but oh so delish). We were recommended a great wine to accompany our food – thumbs up there! Will definitely recommend it.Thank you for the great service.
We stayed at the hotel over the weekend and enjoyed breakfast at The Grill. The cereals and fruit were great, a good selection. The hot food was only luke warm when it came out of the chafing dishes so a little disappointing. The espresso coffee was truly terrible. The toaster took about 5 minutes … was okay and we’d come back.
We went here for an engagement dinner and we were not disappointed, we were a large group of 1 and some of us waited at the bar and had a drink or two before the rest turned up, the place was fantastic, our waiter looked like a chef and for a second I thought the chef was visiting our table! He was very friendly, had a great sense of humour and very attentive. We loved our food, the steaks are amazing and the sides were also delicious, everyone loved their food and cocktails. We had the lamb shoulder which was delicious but would want to try the steaks next time as they were even better. Great place I would definitely come back.
This was our second meal at The Grill and we were bitterly disappointed this time. The front of house staff were not welcoming, barely looking at us as they showed us to our table. We waited another 15 minutes before anyone paid us any attention and the service throughout the evening was slow and inattentive. We had to grab a passing waiter to ask whether we could order some drinks. There was no atmosphere at all and while the food was reasonable, we left feeling that we had paid premium fine-dining prices for a very average experience. We would have been better off at a local cafe – it really took the shine off a birthday celebration. We won’t be returning.
While the main was decent, tho nothing exceptional, at the end of the meal I watched the waiter/bartender pour us two glasses of port, hold up the glasses and deciding it was too much actually pour the port back into the bottle-leaving us with very little port. Also the dessert served was not what was on the menu, with items missing or substituted. All in all we left feeling the Grill was doing things on the cheap, at fine dining pricing.
We ate at The Grill when we stayed at the Duxton a couple of weekends ago. While the accommodations were far from adequate, The Grill was a pleasant surprise. In short, the food itself was superb. All four of us pronounced the food superior to any we had tasted recently in Auckland, and we thoroughly enjoyed it all. We would have liked a little quiet music to add some atmosphere (which was missing completely), but even this was forgivable when we were presented with our food. It really could not be faulted by any of us. For me, the Duck was superb. The wait staff were friendly and attentive, and we never felt crowded or lacking attention.Thank you for being the one shining light in our Duxton Experience. While everything else we experienced at the hotel was mediocre to poor, the chef at the Duxton made this a memorable weekend.
