The Grange is damn good. I came here with my mum and her friend for drinks. Since I don’t drink alcohol and there wasn’t any mock-tails on the menu we asked the bar tender and he kindly made me a mock-tail. He asked what type of mock-tail I wanted so I just said something with raspberry or mint. And when the mock-tail came it was raspberry and mint and he did a great job it tasted divine. The service and drinks were 10/10, since it was late afternoon we were sitting outside next to the fire heaters it was lovely, then a waitress came and gave us blankets and had a good chat with us. The staff were super friendly and so nice of them to whip up that mock-tail for me. Defiently will be back. x
The Grange opened just before Christmas and we decided to try it on the first Thursday of 2019.The restaurant was relatively busy given the exodus out of Auckland for the Christmas break. The fit out is elegant and well done and makes up for there being no views.Unfortunately The Grange is into sharing plates, but as we discovered the smaller plates are too small to be shared so you need a lot of them and the larger plates arent that big either. We had the bone marrow with red peppercorns for $20 (very tasty), cured meats and pickles for $25 (average and not good value), two reasonable sized garlic prawns for $22 (the pick of the dishes), the chicken terrine for $16 (looked good but was tiny and had no taste), the spaghetti with pepper and pecorino cheese (this could have been pick of the night but the pasta was more like angel hair and therefore to thin to support the sauce, it needs a more robust pasta like bucatini. It was also too small). The deserts were fantastic – you get a large olive oil sponge cake with preserved fruit for $15. Two reasonable helpings of pecorino and manchego cheese for $28 and three scopes of manufactured ice cream for $14.The wine list covers a wide range of wines, tastes and prices and is in my view the best wine list in Takapuna. We went for the Gotas Albario from Spain for $68 – a fantastic wine. Service was friendly but they need to change the plates on a regular basis if they stick with the sharing plate approach. Prawn shells, pasta and chicken terrine is not a good combo!Basically The Grange has huge potential but they need to look at the size of their dishes and some of the ingredients.Going for 3+ but with a bit of work it could easily be a 4.
