Went to this place on a sunny Saturday arvo!! It was an absolute treat, I got a Margarita and my friend got an Aperol Spritz which were both delicious and decorated beautifully. The $16 Cheese Dip and was a little on the pricey side of things, but we were licking the bowl clean so didnt phase us too much . I also got the Pork Belly Bao Bun which tasted good but a little too much sauce, other wise would have been perfect. We had a really attentive waitress also who was very responsive and quick despite the full house!
We went here for lunch and it has a nice atmosphere and decor, concrete floor and high table seating with a cosy feel to it. They allowed our two dogs to come in which was really nice and service was very good. Small selection of some very nice gin and Tonics. Menu seemed like a good selection, for lunch we had the ribs and salmon curry and both of them were cooked just right.
Visited this place last Friday just after lunch time. It has the beginnings of a great local hangout…However, the place crumbled under pressure and I wouldn’t say it was that busy. It took a while for the food to come out, some things got forgotten and the lack of basics such as sufficient serviettes and sharing plates was a huge no-no. The cheese dip was just outright bad – overcooked, burnt liquid. I guess it does say sizzling… The rest of the food was pretty good – especially the ribs. The beer selection was great.A bit of a hit-and-miss, perhaps just needs some time to get the bearings right. However, given the level of standard that is typically associated with Ponsonby, one wonders how and when.
Toilets, toilets, toilets – when will hospitality joints get it right?!I like Hoppers – when it’s not crazy busy and you can’t hear yourself think. The range of on tap beers is one of the best in Auckland, the food is up there and the decor is cool. But why oh why do the toilets in these sorts of places so often border on grotesque? Shared male/female? That was a nice try 10 years ago and let me make it clear – women don’t want to use a toilet where a drunk man has been spraying around!! And 2 toilets for the whole place – really?? And when I was last there, the paper in the dispenser had run out and the replacement was lying on the floor, more than a little soiled by – you guessed it – the spray. Eeyew!!If it wasn’t for that disgusting experience, I would have rated the place far higher.
Went to this place last night.Atmosphere was loud but good, did quieten down later.Drinks menu was good, had a wine then ordered a bottle with dinner. The food was very tasty – but very beige colour. Was hard to order a vegetable dish with anything green! Got the Karage Chicken, some dumplings (even the Vege one -still beige looking) and also the Cheese dip with corn chips. The cheese dip was amazing! Definitely worth coming back for. Also had the Roti donut for dessert and that was good too.Overall we would go back for the Cheese dip and maybe a cheeky vino. Would try and order differently next time
This place is great for a casual drink/catch up on a summer’s day. Bit chilly outdoors after the sun goes down but they have retractable roofs and outdoor heaters. Gets quite noisy though so not good if you’re into a more relaxed quiet vibe.Always really busy from 6pm onwards but all good as long as you’re happy to share a table and wait a bit for/waved down service. Had a house sav with some of their items from the food menu – soft shell crab bao, kumara fries and karage chicken. The bao was really tasty but tiny for the price! Karage chicken was a bit lacking in flavour. Food seems to come out pretty quick once you place your order but it did take a while for us to do that as the waitresses were all swamped. The decor was the coolest part of this bar, all done in a faux vintage garden bar look and a bunch of funky hilarious animal portraits on the walls, apparently all done by the owner.
