I had high hopes when I first saw this place. Being a Shanghai born kiwi, I love my Shanghainese cuisine. Or facsimiles of what New Zealand has to offer. LanXiangGe advertises itself a Shanghai cuisine restaurant, its decorated in a way to make all Shanghainese nostalgic. It offers some of the most well known dishes from Shanghai. And that is how it got me to walk in the door. However, even with its owner telling me that they do the best xiaolongbao. I came to a different conclusion. Mind you I was really excited to dine there, I love my xiaolongbao just like any other xiaolongbao lover. Hehe. So when the xiaolongbao came to the table, I picked one up and put in my mouth. My wife asked me straight away on my thoughts of it. My reply, I am not sure how to tell you, I put it in my mouth and without even figuring out what it tastes like. It just disappeared. Literally, the xiaolongbao are very xiao, or small. Its probably the smallest xiaolongbao that I have ever eaten in my life. Lol. In that visit, we ordered heaps of variety of dishes suitable for a lunch for 4. And to be honest, nothing stood out as great or even just good. All the dishes were lacklustre, missing one thing or another. And its definitely not worth the prices they are charging. If you are not familiar with Shanghainese cuisine and want to try it. Then LanXiangGe is a ok option, but if you know what Shanghainese cuisine is all about, then there are so many better options around Auckland :-).
Have been here twice. Once for lunch, once for dinner. Both experience are satisfactory. The marinated duck and marinated bean dough are especially amazing. It is typical Shanghai flavor. They also provide free sweet mung bean soup as desert. Service is fast and friendly. Will definitely come back again.
We happened to be here on first day it opened. It was nice decoration from a popular Chinese TV show. But food was average, small portion and quite expensive ($90 for two). And i was surprised they didn’t have ingredients for one of our orders on the very first day!
A newly opened shanghai traditional restaurantNice environment and seen like very popular. However, the food is average and a little bit expensive. we ordered is below average….there are good food here, maybe we just miss order them….we don’t really recommended here to my friends
Best place for lunch. Food is tasty! The sweet and sour and black bean beef dishes are especially good. Great portion sizes. I would like to see more items in the lunch menu that are on the mains menu 🙂
