This place is always really busy so a small wait is required. We tried the xiao long bao, wontons, duck, tofu skin. Best place for xiao long bao on the Shore so I strongly recommend. Duck can be a little salty for some people!
Chu Long Ji restaurant serves one of the best (or possibly the best in Auckland/NZ) Soup Dumplings (better known as Xiao Long Bao). Their wrapper, fillings and overall taste are on par with global Chinese restaurant chain Din Tai Fong. Not your typical dumplings, but the ones where you should carefully pick up from the basket and put it on your soup spoon, then poke a hole so the soup spills out a little on your spoon and quickly pop in to your mouth. (Just google How to eat Xiao Long Bao and go to Chu Long Ji to try it with your friends. Its pretty fun that way)Simple, clean and well decorated, this restaurant offers other really delicious food too. Their noodles and desserts are good. This is a semi-self serviced restaurant, where you would need to place your order and grab cutlery at the counter before their staff brings your order to you. Will be back to try other Shanghainese dishes and might be grabbing a basket of Xiao Long Bao each next time.
Came in for a family dinner tonight. Ordered so much food. The soup dumplings were quite sweet and tasted delicious. Best I’ve had in Auckland so far. The potato shreds were flavoured well. The yangzhou fried rice didn’t have much oil to it/flavour to it and tasted rather healthy. The well-stewed soup noodles were one of my favourites. The flavour wasn’t too strong or too light. Also loved the texture of the noodles. I preferred these noodles over the noodles mixed with scallion, oil and soy sauce. I would definitely come back again to try all the other dishes. There were so many more items on the menu that I wanted to try.
Very good food with affordable prices, definitely recommended. Wonton are one of the best I have tried, all we ordered are great except the fried noodle are not really our style. Will definitely come back all the time!
Dont get me wrong food is great and staff were fabulous. But little dishes add up and final bill can surprise you for the amount of good you had.
I would say, this is the best Shanghai restaurant i have been to in Auckland. The interior is great, both modern and traditional style well blended. They dont have an extensive menu, but 90% of the dishes are above average. The soup dumpling (Xiao Long Bao) here at Chu Long Ji can almost rival with Din Tai Fung. (the Michelin starred restaurant specialising soup dumpling) The dumpling skin is thin with juicy filling. When you lift up a dumpling with your chopsticks, you can see a little drop from the bottom of the dumpling, thats what I call a good Xiao Long Bao. Lots of soup with thin skin but not too thin to a point where it breaks as soon as you put your chopsticks to it. I would not recommend the Wu Xi style soup dumpling though, its way too sweet for my liking. The noodles and wontons are also very nice, especially with their special stew soup, simply the best.
The real cheap eat, cheap and delicious, I find it’s getting harder and harder to say this about anything in Auckland these days but this place is quite legit. Bowl of simple basic noodles for less than $10! They not skimping on quantity either, small side dishes are also available for change (literally) and man they pack that oldschool flavour from China that I LOVE! This is peasant food guys and it’s well worth trying! But honestly, you’re going here for the soup buns, they are pretty freakin amazing, without any dips and sauces, straight up delicious, very hot on the inside though so eat carefully, but drinking that aromatic, oily, delicious soup just opens up your appetite for more, and again, not expensive to have a load of these either!
