9 years ago I celebrated my 30th Birthday at the Wellington Flying Burrito Brothers. A festive dinner which included a long table of 20 friends, tequila shots, great service and some tasty Mexican treats, including the first time I’d ever tried Jalapeno Poppers. The rest of that night is a blur, Courtenay Place in Wellies can really bite if you have enough money in your pocket. It’s 9 years later and following many after-work beers at the Lumsden is was time for food. Tucks & Bao was the choice for dinner, as we wondered over we stumbled upon The Flying Burrito Brothers. Instantly it conjured memories of the Wellington soiree all those years ago, we had to eat here. Now.Jalapeno Rellenos (Poppers) – Jalapeno’s filled with a 3 cheese mix, crumbed and deep fried. Sounds good right? But what should be served with a silky mornay (cheese) dipping sauce, instead was served with a stodgy cheese sauce that was more glue like than sauce like. I doubt management would read these reviews, let alone the chefs, but this dish could be propelled if the kitchen put more care into the sauce.Guacamole – No surprises here, tortilla chips served with fresh guac, pleasant. Next!Taco Al Pollo – Chicken Tacos that hit all the right notes. Southern american style deep fried chicken pieces in soft tacos with chipotle mayo, divine, you can not go wrong with this.Hot Adobe Beef Chimichanga – The kitchen refused to make this for us.Chimichange De Cedro – Pulled pork chimichanga was moreish. As someone who cooks pulled pork regularly, the meat had a great tang to it which made me want to walk into the kitchen to discuss the technique/ingredients used. The condiments served with the chimichanga are an afterthought though, black beans, a very bland tomato salsa and a side salad, all pretty forgettable and not really needed. The disappointment was our request for a Hot Adobe Beef Chimichnga turned down by the kitchen. I could understand the resistance to deviate from the menu if it was a busy night, but we were 2 of 5 people in the restaurant this night. Placing a spoon full of beef into a tortilla rather than pork doesn’t seem like a big ask does it?Service this night was awkwardly stiff. I felt like I was this chap’s first prom date and needed to break the ice with unnecessary laughter to try to ease his tension.Aucklanders these days are spoiled for choice when it comes to Mexican Food. Supermarkets now have dedicated sections of shelves devoted to the stuff. With the news recently that Taco Bell will be setting up shop here soon, we’ll have even more options:- The Lucky Taco – Tacos on the run- Mexicali Fresh – Our version of fast food (Tex) Mexican- The Mexican Cafe – Cheap and cheerful- The Flying Burrito Brothers – Read above- Mexico – Still the crowning jewel when it comes to Mexican food in this city, They change their menus frequently and never fail to deliver with their contrast of colours, textures and flavours.I’d love to see someone challenge Mexico to continue to raise the bar, unfortunately The Flying Burrito Brothers are a long way off that.
Man this place is turning into a rip off. The quality of the food is the same as are the prices but I have to say that the portion sizes have reduced significantly in the few months. I’ve been going to these guys quite frequently over the last 3 years (maybe 12 to 15 times either in store or through UberEats) and so I am familiar with what their portion sizes are.So I just ordered 2x corn chips and 2x salsa verdes thru UberEats and have a look at the portion size of the salsa. Now had I known that it was going to be that little I honestly would never have ordered it since that feels like a total rip off. But because I’ve placed this exact order via UberEats in the past I knew that the salsa would be at least 3x this amount. The chips were less as well but not as noticeable as the salsa. What made it worse was the fact that they didn’t know how much they used to serve their customers because they kept insisting that this was the norm and I know for sure it isn’t. Seems to me as if business might not be going so well if portion sizes have dropped so significantly.Since the portion sizes are not to my satisfaction anymore, I won’t be ordering or visiting your restaurant, at least not nearly as frequently as I used to – sorry FBB, you’ve just lost a loyal foodie 🙁
