Walked past this place and suddenly had cravings for some authentic Shanghai fried pork buns! decided to grab four to takeaway and try it out at home. Unfortunately the buns were already soggy by the time we got home (around 10mins drive) and I was disappointed as an essential part of these fried buns are the crispy bottom. I suspect it’s because they’ve already packaged the takeaway ones and left them there rather than making them fresh…However, after taking a bite into these buns, I was immediately happier as the bun was super juicy (almost like a xiaolongbao) and the pork mince texture was also very smooth. The bun tasted great and the only downside would be the sogginess! I’d probably go back again and probably dine there as I’m sure the freshly made ones would taste even better! My overall rating would be 3.5/5. 🙂
The only place I know that serves Xiao Long Nap/Bao. Each bite creates a flavorful explosion in your mouth that is just delightful! They’re always packed which shows the amount of following they have. Their pork buns are great as well. Only downside I found was they don’t sell or even serve water. :-/ Other than that it’s a great place to have a cheap and tasty meal!
Followed this Fried bun place from Auckland Night Market to this new shop at Northcote. Have always been a fan of their traditional Shanghai style Fried bun and Xiao Long Bao. We had the spicy pork noodle soup to go with the fried bun. The bun was delicious and had heaps of soup in it as usual. Spicy pork noodle had the bean curd and bamboo shoots with mild spicy soup, just like how I used to have them in Shanghai. Love the taste.
You’d hope that a small simple menu would mean that every option offered was outstanding. The Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings were okay but expensive (6 for $6). The $12 spicy soup noodles were a total let down. When we received the dish, it looked nothing like the pictures. A bland white broth with a few chunks of meat/tofu(?) with a red film of not-very-spicy oil. We had to mix it together ourselves and even then the taste was watery. I had higher hopes for this new little shop in Northcote Village, but I think they’ve got a long way before they can stand up to the other heavyweights in the area.
