Such a lovely old pub, a bit of a rabbit warren of warm and cosy rooms and a bustling little kitchen, lovely outdoor seating areas and good food. We stopped by for a light lunch, sharing the divine steamed mussels and clams in white wine & cream sauce with garlic butter on toasted white farmhouse bread, ambrosia!
This is my second visit to this tavern. It is alway sunny over here. We had a huge group on our first visit and this tavern has a great outdoor area to cater for many more groups plus an lawn area to let the kids and dogs can run around. It has a relaxing and laid back atmosphere. We had lunch today and the kitchen is located out back. You have to order the drinks and food separately. We had the mussels which came in this very cute container in a great sauce. We suspected the mussells were from frozen. I had the squid with salad which looked delicious. Squid was deep fried and tasted fresh. I would have added a dressing and salt. The big breakfast was consumed quickly so that went down well. The beef sarnie was huge. We expected a toasted sandwich but it was like a burger with chips. We found the chips very floury which may be a characteristic of the potato or undercooked. It is easy for the customer to compare the quality of the fries from different restaurants as these morsels are served with everything. These need zing on the dish. I will be sure to come back with another group.
The place itself is great, plenty of space and an open garden to site while having a beer. But I didn’t enjoy the experience that much after I got my food.Me and my friends ordered three different dishes plus chips and all had a sauce that had, in the end, the same artificial taste. One of the dishes was also cold, although it was a meat that should be braised for hours.Apart from that I’d still go there for a beer or two. But food, no more.
Purely food related as I am pregnant and never been for a night drinking at this pub, but the good is SO good! Roast veg salad is incredible, all the pies and amazing quality – prices are great too. Love the food here
Great place for a couple of cold ones, the garden bar is excellent in the summer and the pub has a nostalgic feel. Definitely not the place to go for great food, we’ve eaten a couple of times and found the food to be average at best both times.
Top notch fush and chups, good selection of alcs and a mint beer garden for summer, what more could one want? Staff are friendly and the venue is awesom3, tidy clean and historically interesting.
Best place for a Sunday beer! This is one of Auckland’s ,oldest pubs. It was originally used in the early 1800s for the workmen on wharf!Shit this place is good for the old school pub feel, kid friendly, good pub food, great garden, good for watching sports games – I love this old place!
