I visited this lovely wee bar several times on my visit from England. The bar has a great atmosphere and is small enough that it feels intimate. I found the food great and the service outstanding. I’d definitely recommend this place if your after a beer and some grub in the local area. And what’s more, it’s a stones throw away from one of the best beaches in NZ!

Sorry to be having to write this. But when you have pre booked a meal 2-3 weeks in advance you expected a bit more than instant potato mash and frozen veg with steak on your plate. I would have thought there would have been a nice baked potato and nice chopped carrots with a broccoli and cauliflower in white sauce.

We had a lovely dinner at the Pioneer Bar last night (Friday). I knew the bar had new owners, so felt like a quiet, local dinner and a few drinks to end the working week. The bar was buzzing when we got there, but was really cozy and warm with a gas fire going, nice ambient music and lots of local faces really enjoying their Friday night tipples at the bar. It is clear the bar has a strong local following, with a real feel of camaraderie – very akin the tv programme Cheers. The fish was fresh terakihi and it was done with a lemon pepper crust, which I loved, the seasoning was perfect. The fries, although simple were perfectly cooked and the salad was light, fresh and dressed with a light citrus dressing. One word – YUM, and at $17, what value for money. Hubbys aid the tap Tiger beer was very, very nice and the house Chardonnay was also very fine. The service, the host Noey Houghton and the local music (live) that is also free was an added plus for us. Thank you Pioneer, you are a welcome addidition to the coast.

Great atmosphere with young up and coming band playing on Friday nights. Recently had my 21st there and the staff were great, very friendly. The food is amazing! I ordered the Cabonara for dinner and it was hands down the best Cabonara I have ever had. The pizzas are also a great meal or snack with two sizes available.I would say despite the previous reviews you should head on down and give them a chance because they might have just what you need.

Had a big day at work and knew I wouldn’t feel like cooking when I got home, so called in to the Pioneer Bar to see what they had on offer. I knew they were under new management and have been a couple of times for a beer but hadn’t tried the food yet. I ordered the steak and then asked how long it would take, told 15 – 20 minutes which sounded great as I had missed lunch! Long story short my meal turned up within the time frame, looked amazing! and tasted great! I was a bit unsure about the ‘red wine flavoured jus’ or whatever that it came with (or peppercorn) but was assured it wasn’t too sweet and didn’t taste like red wine – wow! am I glad I ordered it! Absolutely lovely! The fries were thinner fries and obviously fresh and nicely crisp, without being too crisp; the steak was tasty and tender, the salad was fresh and the whole meal was well presented. A sizeable meal and very good value for money I felt, will definitely be back for another steak at some stage plus will try some of the other items on the menu. Thanks to the chef and bar staff, fast, friendly service all round!

Went in for dinner this weekend, great food and surroundings. We shared the large Odyssey pizza, great tasting pizza and perfect size for sharing. The cross cut fries will also be our new go to snack/ starter when we are in, so good!
