Pretty average island food outlet. I tried both the lou with lamb (very oily) and with salt meat. Both were a lil dry and needing more coconut cream. Donuts were very oily and the faka kai was a bit bland but its good to see an outlet serving it. I love island food and always support polly businesses so will be back to give another chance. Service is okay.
Want to experience the diets of rugby stars Nehe Milner-Skudder, Jonah Lomu and Malakai Keitoa? A Tongan/ Islander eatery, Melinas is a must stop for those wanting some traditional meals and who are after something different to their usual Thai takeaways.A disappointing aspect of New Zealand culture, in my opinion, has been their lack of appreciation for Maori and Islander cuisine, having a sizable population of Maori and Islanders I had always expected there to be more Maori and Islander eateries.Discovered by surprise as I was picking up some meals from Blossom Court I was surprised and intrigued by Melinas Island Roasts, so I made a conscious decision to try it out next time I was going to eat out. Ill admit entering the store that I was a little nervous, however, the very kind lady who served me was patient and helpful as I asked questions about the different type of dishes. To try Islander cuisine, I made the decision to buy large! I bought a roasted lamb, another dish that consisted of Beef wrapped in taro leaves infused with onion and carrot, a two-choice of coconut cabbage and chop suey with steak. For dessert, I got a pineapple pie which was a cookie-based on mashed pineapple and cream on top. An interesting use of flavors and textures, I really enjoyed my island cuisine experience. The meals are on the more carbo-load side, but without a doubt the food is hearty.Showstopper: Roast LambOverall Grade: B+
This locally owned store cooks up some classic Tongan dishes that are very popular among the locals. Prices are very cheap.Plenty of options, from proteins such as roast pork, fried chicken and stewed lamb to sides like potatoes, yam, creamed cabbage and chop suey. But be careful they run out fast! By the time I got there, all the fried chicken and sides were depleted.Since the popular items ran out I decided to try some stewed steak. Unfortunately it was very bland, dry and overcooked. However I also picked up some Keke Isite (donuts) and this made up for the dried beef. Only $1 for 4 of them and each donut was almost the same size as a tennis ball!! They are sweet, soft and spongy. It is a must try item!
