You’d be hard-pressed to find a cafe that serves seafood chowder at $10 that’s as pleasantly satisfying as the one found here. Sprinkled over with chopped parsley, it makes for a gently creamy and flavourful lunch with ample contributions from soft clams and the like. Other selections are moreish too, like a $6.50 bowl of pasta humming with Mediterranean echoes. A bowl of fried rice also turns out to be a cool deal for the same price. The place is tidy, with a nice range of customers and regulars to support it, and has sufficient number of tables for a medium size cafe. Their cabinet selection includes sandwiches, pies and also sushi ! Chicken wrap, chicken-‘n’-cheese in filo pastry and multi-grain sandwich are not bad either. Their couscous with soft chickpeas, finely chopped onion and slivers of chicken is a healthful alternative, with flavour echoes harking back to as far away as Konkan snacks, but could do with zingier taste. Japanese Black Curry ($12) may possibly satisfy you if you’re only after a basic winter warmer akin to a regulation beefy stew thickened up from meat stock. You’ll have better luck with familiar continental favourites like Eggs Benedict which is a sumptuous creamy treat here, served with toast to mop up the sauce. Cherry Pie is texturally agreeable but there’s no hit of flavour – the sauced cherries find better expression layered over whipped cream on a choux pastry for a delectable ‘Eclair’. Mille feuille which is supposed to be delicately stacked thin layers of crisp pastry with cream in between, was a wan shadow here. Things pick up with almond croissant which is flattened but pleasantly soft and crunchy with powdered sugar and almond flakes. So this place, in the ‘Roselands’ cluster of shops in Papakura, is surely better than many other same ol’ cafes. 2.5/5 = above average. upnworld.com

Love the French pastry – worth the travel just for those. I buy several of these hidden genuine French masterpieces. Coffee good along with the cooked breakfast but the patisserie style goods are amazing.
