The Corner Cafe was my go to years ago. Lovely owners, good coffee and pretty good food. My have things changed. The 1st thing I noticed walking in is the lack of customers and this is peak luchtime! Not a good sign and really I should have turned and walked out but thought I’d give it a go as it now has new owners. The Corner Cafe is tired and rundown now. The Corner cafe is also not that clean. The black chairs scattered about are dirty with greasy fingerprints all over them. There is dirt about that should have been wiped down months ago. The wooden floor out the side is absolutley filthy. Something is alive and growing across the window. The dark wood tables, black chairs and general dreary atmosphere doesnt help. However I thought maybe the new owners put their all energy into the food which would make up for the lacklustre first impression.No. They dont. At all.In fact the new owners seem very much like they have been cutting corners. A lot of corners.I had the eggs bene with salmon on kumara rosti. Eggs were ok. Kumara rosti was left in the deep fryer too long but was just ok. Salmon tasted like the cheap stuff from countdown. But the thing that I am now an hour later still feeling ill from was the hollandaise sauce. It was almost white, tasted like a mixture of toxic plastic and powdered milk and was sickly sweet. I asked the owner how they make their hollandaise and was informed it came out of a packet. Either the owners are attempting to chef when they clearly cant – or their fry cook pulled the wool over their eyes about his skills when he got the job. This is such a shame. This was once a good cafe.
