Being the only cafe on the island, this place is always busy. The wait was quite long for such simple dishes, The toasted sandwiches were pretty average – literally just cheese and onions, and the onions were uncooked. Cooked onions and some sauce or flavouring would have been nice. Husband’s corn fritters and my iced chocolate were pleasant though. The girl serving us were lovely and friendly, though when my mother-in-law asked for a cup of water she was declined 🙁 But I understand that being an island they are short on water!
Very average food you can cook at home. Toasties and nachos, really??? I’m taking a trip out here to enjoy the sun and the only adventurous dish on their menu was the green Thai curry, come on guys. Nachos were ok but nothing spectacular. Give me a hot piece of grilled fish, even steak and you’ve got a happy customer. If this place capitalised using their surroundings, this place will go places
I have been to Mansion House Cafe a few times now and really enjoyed the hones, wholesome food and homely service from the staff. Nachos are a fav with me, but my friends have had blts, sauasges/mash and toasties with a variety of fillings. Decent meals for our hearty appetites, see you in the summer. Oh and I think the ‘old man’ Linda D talks about is a caretaker or something, quite a nice old fellow if you actually talk to him, his tobacco pipe is very old school, cool.
The staff and owner are amazingly flexible and helpful. When I arrived they informed me they had a large group of youngsters booked for lunch – it would probably be noisy inside, too hot out on their enclosed patio. So suggested they set a table out under a beautiful tree on the lawn of the grand old Mansion House, view of the bay, peacocks wandering around just ten feet from us. Then they served a lovely, tasty lunch, not gourmet, but considering the island location – with no shops – everything was fresh and nicely prepared. I’d like to give five stars but the menu was a bit limited. Deserts were wonderful.
I don’t want to even reward them with a star. What an awful pace to visit. Extremely rude staff, an old man walking the whole time with his cigarettes in his mouth blowing smoke everywhere. The food is even more horrible. Bangers and mash is breakfast sausages cooked in a bottle of oil with a cold piece of potato. A toasties is a thin slice of bread and if you find the filling you can win a prize. The whole set up is dirty. Staff don’t have any food handling experience by the way they serve the food. The fork yesterday fell. One just bend over , picked it up and bring it with the food. What would visitors to this country think of this. Horrible.
Lovely location, but such rude staff! Had to wait for ages until they had finished sitting down to their own afternoon tea before they would serve us with ours. They could do with a lesson in spelling for the menu too! If you are going to Kawau Island, I would take a picnic and a flask of tea! The saving grace was Solo the peacock, at least he was very friendly.
The staff are very rude there unfortunately. The food was good but not really worth the extra money you have to pay.
