Finally some cool cafes are opening up on the Shore and Major Tom is certainly leading the way. It was packed out when we arrived which is certainly a good sign (even if it was a struggle to get seated). On the plus side, its a cool space, the coffee is great, the menu is filled with some interesting dishes and what we tried from the cabinet (spinach and cheese scone and a lamington) was very tasty. On the downside, what we did order from the menu, the Shaka Bra salad, was impeccable presented but tasted very average. It came with a mixture of halloumi, beetroot, cranberries, walnuts, quinoa, pumpkin and spinach with a poached egg on top, which should be a winning combination. However, the salad had too many sweet components with nothing to counterbalance the flavour. Also the grilled halloumi was kinda slimy and we take our cheese seriously so this was a bit of a disappointment. All in all it was a decent salad but could have been better executed.Im not gunna write Major Tom off completely coz they had other delectable-sounding options on their menu but perhaps weve just learnt our lesson to never order the salad!
We were lucky to get one car space for us. Lots of other empty spaces are reserved for kindergarten(?)When we entered the cafe around 1pm, it was not packed, about 2/3 full. We were seated straight away. After a quick viewing of the menu, we decided to get something from the cabinet. We went and checked the cabinet food.I thought someone behind the counter would take our order but the staff making coffee told us that the order would be taken at the table.I felt that’s inconvenient to explain what we want away from the cabinet, because some of the sweets don’t have the names shown.Anyway I told the serving lady who came towards us indicating what we want at the cabinet quickly. Again we were asked to go back to our table for taking orders.I used to pay first at other cafes but this place is different. I’m not sure if this is a good flow of serving system or not.One more thing we found difficult is the talking noise inside the cafe. Even my old family member who has difficulty in hearing said the noise would make her headache. We had to talk in a loud voice ourselves to have conversations. Is it something to do with the structural problem? Both of the sweets we get ( custard cream doughnut and blueberrie cheese cake) were not bad.The cake was one of other sweets which were outside of the cabinet not covered. If it was chilled, it could be more nice. The iced coffee had some faint taste that I felt a bit strange.
Have tried eating here 2 times now and both times we came it was too busy and we couldn’t get a seat. Third time lucky we finally got to eat here. My Mum & I got the avo on toast and were a bit disappointed. The bread is black – charcoal infused, which tastes weird and is unnecessary and its also not toasted and the avocado makes the bread soggy. All the other ingredients on top are just unnecessary and don’t add any flavour. Presentation was pretty though. The cabinet food looks so good so we tried a slice and a cake and they were quite nice but the menu food isn’t that pleasant. Think the cafe is over hyped. Most likely won’t be back.
Had beautiful coffee and a lovely welcome from all the well presented food. Awesome coffee and a bright atmosphere within the cafe. They also had cabinet food and desserts to choose from. Very friendly customer service, had allocated parking for the customers. Has inside and outside areas to enjoy the meals. Recommended 🙂
Most people go to Major Tom for their beautifully plated meals, however I went for a cabinet food instead on a fine Saturday morning. Still looks pretty, however the spinach scones was a bit too dry to my liking even after I spread some butter on it. Coffee was on the average side.Fantastic ambiance and service. And well done on winning the hearts of many for putting time into incredible presentations plate after plate.Anyway, I’ll probably be back to try their other menu items another day. Their crisscross fries look yummy.P/S: Double check parking rules with staff if unsure as there are allocated spots for the cafe.
Major Tom makes most beautiful food and presentation ever and best value for money. Really excellent service! I would highly recommend to all. If you are around Rosedale must try
