Had to get something German, rather than something I could get at any other cafe. It was pretty good although I guess I expected something more spectacular. It was kind of late so there wasnt many baked goods anymore but I imagine those are what really makes the place so next time Ill definitely get some pretzels to takeaway.
Excellent bread (all of them, rye, sourdoughs – the ‘crusty’ is to die for…!), superb croissants, friendly service, so happy to welcome to Three Lamps, Ponsonby.
I love German bread and was keen to check out this reasonably new addition to central Auckland. Ordered a brezel (pretzel) and asked if they would butter it for us. They were very accommodating and sliced and buttered for free. Really liked the genuinely friendly new guy on the till and the lady teaching him – we felt very welcome 🙂 brezel was ok but not super fresh ( I know how fast they go stale, so probably more of a comment on how many people were buying them that day) but it was a bit average. Needed to put back in the oven for a bit to make it a bit crunchy. We decided to try a hot chocolate to wash it down but it was absolutely average just tasted like hot water with cocoa. Probably won’t be back for the loaves or hot drinks, but maybe would try the cakes next time – they are a bit different than standard Cafe fare though not that enticing in their display. I would love if they made their ambiance a little more unique or served their breads and cakes more attractively on the counter- e.g. Winona forever style. I think for fresh German style bread I’ll stick with Farro Fresh, Wild Wheat and especially the amazing Diehls (the best bakery ever!) Also check out nearby Little Bread and Butter Cafe at Ponsonby Central for more (sometimes) fresh bread nearby.
My friend who lives in Germany for at least 15 years made me a plum slice, since that I can’t never forget how wonderful taste it is! Luckily, I found this German bakery in Auckland! Their apple slice it just divine! Came here so many time, and this is the must have for me
Have only been in a couple of times so far so still trying to work out what they offer and what is good. Was recommended the soup of the day last time and this was very nicely received! The cabinet food selection could be beefed up a bit (more German style pastries please!!), and the general vibe needs a little zhooshing up to give it more millennial appeal… otherwise this is a pleasant new addition to Three Lamps!
A beautiful little place on the corner of ponsonby Road and college hill. Went there with some friends and ordered a spread, all for under $30! It’s great value considering the quality you get. Great food, definitely going back again for the breads.
All in all was an above average cafe. Had a bacon and egg roll, the roll is nicely baked but was a little dry and the egg was over cooked. An option to put butter on the bread would score some bonus points. There was great service and he plain pretzel was good. Would definitely recommend this caf to any German bread lovers.
