Lived in Ponsonby for 10 months now, and this is the first I’ve been here. Really craved honey chicken on fried rice – which isn’t on their menu. They were accommodating and it wasn’t a problem to make this for me. The best honey chicken fried rice yet! Wontons are also very good.
When long-time Westmere icon John Happy hung up his apron and called retirement in early 2016, there was widespread fear that Happy’s Takeaways could stop providing the fantastic food they’ve been sharing since the 1970s. Fortunately, Happy’s successors have done nothing but build on the shop’s merits and haven’t ruined a thing.Happy Takeaways provides perhaps the best value for money out of any takeaway shop I’ve seen in the country. I haven’t known anyone who has been able to eat more than $10 worth of food here. Hotdogs for $1.50 and quality burgers around the $5 mark are examples of good value and prices which have remained unchanged for the last 10+ years. My personal favourite items are the handmade wontons and Happy’s legendary fried rices. A container of the fried rice will set you back only $10 and is a whole meal for one plus very generous leftovers (the fried rice is one of those foods which can taste even better microwaved the next day). With all of Happy’s Takeaways, it is essential, after collecting your order, to walk or drive down the road to the old sea wall. This is where regulars from near and far have eaten Happy’s for generations and provides for a good view (just watch out for seagulls!)Will continue to come here and hope it remains for me to bring my grandchildren one day
came down here for lunch after a nearby project and had the won hon soup containing x 10 won hons and just like any typical westernized Chinese dish from yer local takeout shop, cheers diners…
After doing a little bit of fishing down at Westhaven Marina, we would stop here to get some dinner for home. We usually order only chips from here and nothing else, because it’s so fresh and hot you don’t want to eat with anything (except sauce, you gotta have sauce)Ordinary service you get from at other takeaway, just the friendly greeting and what we would like to order. The cooking time was quick, which was good because we were all starving at the time. It’s so good to have a huge door as an entrance, it tends to get really hot going in especially in the summer. Yeah just your typical takeaway layout, with some chairs. The place is quite clean too, which is a plus.
Ordered sweet and sour bbq pork and combination meats in black bean sauce. Big portions, loads of veg and meat but flavour was lacking in the black bean dish. Staff were friendly and shop was very clean, very well priced too. Quite a few people ordering which is always a good sign. Will come back for sure and try something else
This place is quite simply a completely normal, garden-variety Chinese takeaway. It was super busy when we arrived around 6.30pm, and turned out that it was a deceptively long wait because of phone orders so it took a decent chunk of time. Owners and staff clearly know everyone so very friendly atmosphere. Very much a favoured local spot as you can see from the other reviewers! There is a big variety of Chinese takeaway food with a couple (literally two)of Nasi Indonesian dishes on the menu. There is also the fried menu which included a fairly small selection of deep fried things compared to some others. We had arrived looking for fish and chips so we chose a hoki fillet, one order of chips, a potato fritter, pineapple fritter and chicken nuggets (x6). Paid $11 in total so great value for money. The chip serving was hefty but the chips were pretty average, pale and a little dry. Would probably try the kumara chips next time. The fish was a hulking big chunk and was very tender and yummy (and for only $3). Potato fritters and pineapple fritter was decent (a ring of canned pineapple battered). Chicken nuggets were yummy and crispy.I’d recommend walking to the end of the street and unrolling your fried yummies by the waters edge (all the locals seem to be doing it) and hanging your feet over the water. Gorgeous view 🙂
Happy is an institution in Westmere. They have been here for over 25 years and there is a reason for that…we just won’t let them retire.Always happy, always filling and a great meal, always lots of fresh veggies and plenty of meat, you won’t be short changed. Thoroughly recommended.
