We’ve been to this restaraunt and its predecessor a few times, more in hope than anticipation. The first time for Hui was the summer just gone, and it was worth a 3/5. We went at Easter and i would have to lift that to a 4.5. The atmosphere is nice, the service is friendly but a little shy, the food was very good and the prices were reasonable. In Whakatane, you can go to Rocquette which is city standard and priced, and then the next level of quality and price is pretty poor. Hui fills that gap really well. It’s not world class, but what it sets out to do, it does very well.
We feel compelled to write a review for this restaurant as we see there have been some mixed reviews. Being new locals we decided to try it out on a Friday night despite the reviews. Our meals were good and very fresh and the service was good. We ordered red wines by the glass and they tasted like the bottle had been opened too long – no problems – they were changed with no fuss and poured from a new bottle. Overall a pleasant laid back atmosphere and good value. We’ll happily be back.Rob and Mary
Arrived Friday morning placed was empty though 3 tables of 2 outside in courtyard. No background music but radio on in kitchen. No hello from person at till. Waited until she was ready to take our order! Three coffees took 20mins. They were watery and undrinkable. Very disappointing for our local hosts who took us there.
We were staying at Ohope and had friends call in so took them out for dinner at Hui Bar – wish we hadn’t. Mussels were lovely. Bread platter was yuck, the dips were horrible, not offered a knife to spread dips on bread. Our guests choose venison and we were so embarrassed they couldn’t cut through the meat it was too tough. Dessert was also a disappointment. I had cheesecake with lemon sauce that looked like and tasted as if it was the chef’s first attempt at making it – he should of thrown it in the bin and started again cos I would of. Service was fine the young waiter apologized for being new which was fine with us. The prices charged for what we got was a disgrace and we will not be going back or recommending this establishment to our friends. A local the next morning told us that they had heard this restaurant was getting bad feedback since it changed owners and wished they had spoken to me before to recommend somewhere better.
My husband and I went to eat at Hui in Ohope during lunch time on labour weekend. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with a very relaxed and inviting atmosphere. On arriving we were immediately a little surprised with the lack of customer service from the staff. We had to wait 15 minutes just to get menus and when we ordered our lunch it took an hour to come to our table. The restaurant wasn’t that busy so we were extremely surprised to wait this long. A table with older diners sat next to us and I had to go and notify the waiting staff that they needed attention. The food when it did arrive was really good. This could be an amazing place but the staff really need to be educated in customer service.
My mum and I came to this restaurant on a Saturday for lunch. Lovely presentation of the restaurant, had a lovely waitress who seated us promptly and took our drink order within minutes. The meal was delicious, I had the salad my mum had the chicken dish, wonderful food and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend anyone to go here, and in the heart of Ohope beautiful. Will be eating here again for my anniversary.
