To whom it may concern. The Cornerstone Pub Tauranga Review. On Saturday evening (25th March) me and severalothers had been out at the races and afterwards thought ‘let’s have dinner outdowntown’ experience the night life etc. People asked me ‘where is good placeto go’ having been a Tauranga local for several decades and being brought up inTauranga. I said I knew this place called the Cornerstone Pub – which for manyyears prior has been a great band venue and my experiences/memories there weregreat. We duly arrived at about 6-630pm and ordered several food plattersand some drinks to accompany such. We were having a great time until a securityperson started his shift there, it would seem. He went about clearing tablesand chairs and appeared to be eyeing our table and the people at it constantly. He approached one of our guests to advise that one of us (the person who sohappened to be the director of a successful national business with connectionsto high profile business leaders in Tauranga) appeared to have too much todrink and he should have some water. Without incident we supplied him withwater and continued about our evening but at the same time were a tadbewildered as to why he had been singled out too – he wasn’t that drunk at alljust laughing and having a great time. Not long after I noticed that there were several securityfolks eyeballing us and continually walking over and around the area with theirarms crossed and ‘spying at us’ continuously. This made me feel very uneasy andto say the least quite threatened. I took it upon myself to ask to speak to theduty manager on at the time and if I could have a private word about how wewere feeling at this stage. One of the security guards (the main perpetrator) came rightup beside us, again with arms crossed and a stern look. I asked if he couldleave us please, and he replied with, “I’m protecting my manager!” – A commentwhich again made me feel as though I had been profiled to be a danger topeople. I asked him to leave again and he became obstructive until his managersaid ‘its ok’ – he never left actually, instead stepped a few feet away andanother of my party started to ask him why he was being so threatening and intimidating. He said it was his job to be and that we were causing a problem!!!!I then queried the duty manager why the security did not interveneearlier when a drunk person from outside the bar was asking for cigarettes anda drink – we had kept telling him to leave us alone and eventually when hefigured out none of us were going to supply the cigs and drink he left – not withouta verbal slanging match at us – calling us all sorts while we sat there in aweof his behaviour towards us when we were actually inside the pub surrounds.Nice to see security avoid these situations ay!!I also queried why women’s bags were being searched prior toentry and where the signs were to inform patrons this was to be expected – no signsexisted at all. They said they were checking bags for alcohol and drugs?! Imean really!! I worked 12 years in acute mental health and can spot drug usersa mile off – perhaps better training is needed – or assume people are innocentuntil proved guilty or otherwise and whenalready inside your premises first and foremost – that is a far better policingthan assuming everyone is a drug user or smuggler of booze prior to entry!!I also asked why there was a 1metre gap as the entrance whenit was filled with 3-4 security people so people were essentially accosted witha security review prior to entering – I said this was not very inviting and ifthere was a cover charge to enter then I could understand. It seemed to me thatthe security team were more interested in talking to the girls and checkingtheir handbags than males who were waiting to get in also. They were polite tothe ladies and quite rude to the men!I advised the duty manager we were leaving as we simply feltthreatened, intimidated and made to feel like trouble makers. I said we were merelyhaving a laugh and enjoying ourselves, other folks at the tables adjoining hadalso enjoyed the lark and laughs too and even hugged us as they left, so itwasn’t anything upsetting to other patrons.I was left embarrassed to have taken some high profile businesspeople to a pub I thought was a good one, or one I had previously spent many agreat night at. The duty manager didn’t seem to care at all, wouldn’t providethe owners name to complain to and the security certainly had a very stand overpresence and quite the sexist, bullish angle to their behaviour. I wondered whyon earth they had singled us out – we were all well-dressed in suits and shirts, had spent a lot of money for our food and drinks and certainly all of us werenot that drunk that it was a problem for anyone. We had bought food too toensure that we were all of a socially acceptable level of sobriety. We duly moved to another pub – The Phoenix, where we were treatedlike kings and the service was awesome to say the least, it was a complete flipside to the treatment we had had earlier.I will never go to the Cornerstone Pub again and I will certainlybe making sure that as many people I know hear of our experience of it too. Iwill be posting this blurb to my entire network both on facebook, linkedin, andevery email contact. It’s not a place someone can go for a good time – unless youwant to be made feel like a piece of shit, for want of more accuratedescription. My brother took a video of the scene too and when shown tovarious friends and family in Tauranga it’s safe to say we were all taken backwith the sheer abhorrent behaviour displayed by so called ‘professionals’. Foodfor thought huh! This experience certainly made our night in Tauranga one toforget, or one to remember for all the wrong reasons. Thanks Tauranga/Cornerstonepub for showing my guests how backward and uninviting it is. Perhaps we shouldpost this video to youtube/facebook too? Seems that social media is the wayforward exposing these goons and thugs called security! To summarise, the security team there are bully’s, sexist, threatening, intimidating, assume all people/patrons are criminals, treat peoplewith the same ilk that cattle get and their knowledge of rules and regulationswithin tourism and hospitality is severely lacking. They are not the type of peoplewho give tourism and/or hospitality in Tauranga a good name. As someone whogrew up in Tauranga, has worked for the i-site, and has a Tourism/Marketingdegree I am both ashamed and appalled. Thanks Tauranga…sure has changed since Ilast lived there.

First time I’ve been here and never again. 47 years old and first time I’ve been thrown out of a pub!!! Ridiculous decision by petty duty manager who would be better suited for Basil Fawlty. Great night out was absolutely ruined by this silly girl who clearly needs better training. To be fair the rest of the team here were excellent, but owner needs better diplomacy from their key staff.

This definitely would be much better in the night time. But it was breakfast for me. Sunny day open seating and hunger.Friendly staff. Ahmazing fish and chips. And and equally super eggs Benedict. Frankly the coffee wasn’t great. Wasn’t even good. But the beer was. So kinda made up for the lost points. After wiping off my meal, i saw another table having a massive platter. Fried calamari, spring rolls, onion rings, fries, potato wedges and I am pretty sure there was more amazing fried goodness under the elaborate spread. Seemed perfect hangover food.Pricewise: $60 for 2Returns: Yes. I can still hear the platter calling me.

Hubby and I went here last night for dindin. A lovely experience with my fave Lauryn Hill playing in the background. The food was delicious although we have had better before. The chicken burger (no photo) was alright it wasnt worth $15 though. The chipotle in it tasted like tomato sauce. We did wait for a while until the waiter came around so we could order more drinks. But all in all the atmosphere and vibe was inviting and lovely.

Cornerstone has a special place in my heart! Classic pub/bar feel. Can’t go wrong with their hash stack! Service is good and they have bit square tables inside if you are with a big group of people.
