I recently visited Detour bar on a Friday night and was completely impressed by the young Asian gentleman at the front. It was a busy night being Friday, yet he remained completely calm and professional and the smile never left his face. He treated every customer as if they were the only guest in the restaurant and went out of his way to make suggestions for people. Though We have to wait long for our food but Having come from an extensive background in customer service I can say with confidence that this young man epitomises what great customer service is all about and this is a quality I find rare in face-to-face customer contact roles these days. This was my first visit back to Detour in over 5 months after having more than one bad experience at same restaurant and needless to say I have been back to the Detour bar ! Food was delicious!!! Well done Team Detour!!!

After looking at a number of choices for restaurants to choose to be at on New Years eve, we unfortunately chose this one. The service was shocking, I don’t think some of the staff have been trained in restaurant service. Our waitress, did not introduce herself, did not mention the specials. I ordered a slider from the tapas menu – Xmas ham with tomato and cranberry sauce – the bun was so hard I couldn’t get a knife into it, there wasn’t a trace of cranberry sauce, the waitress did not come back to the table after she gave us our meals, so I had to go to the kitchen serving window and get the sauce myself, I had to ask a second time for my drink that I ordered with my meal, then had to get up find the waitress and ask again, then had to get up and get the drink from the bar myself – after I had finished my meal. After our plates were cleared, the waitress came to ask ‘do you guys want dessert’. She never came back again. Unfortunately due to the poor service we did not have desserts or any further beverages there – the owners loss not ours. Food service is just as important as the food. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We have visited Detour on several occasions now and have found the service and food to be excellent on all visits. We find being able to go for a drink and a chat before we eat a great way to start our evening. The staff check to see we have drinks or offer us a selection of breads etc while we relax. The decor and ambiance make the surroundings a pleasant way to spend an evening. Our meals are always well presented and cooked to our liking. The staff are friendly and look after us well. We have taken other family members there for a meal from out of town and they have said they will definitely come back, so will we.

EXCELLENT FOOD, EXCELLENT SERVICE, EXCELLENT ATMOSPHERE!!I feel A LOT of these reviews aren’t quite accurate.. (well at least my experience was VERY different) Its easy to point out negatives about a place but no one seems to take the time to say the positives. This is how I honestly feel about my experience with Detour. Two friends and I went to Detour Bar & Lounge for dinner and a few drinks after work, we didn’t have a table booked or anything but staff where very helpful and quickly arranged a table for us.From there the placed us at a small drinks table to wait while they prepped our dinner table, we were given drink and dinner menus and offered a drink, our waitress (Nesta) was AMAZING, she gave us a rundown of drinks, even pointing out what we might like according to our tastes. While we looked at the menu we were given our drinks (with a beautiful smile and hope you enjoy) and she quickly asked if we were ready to order yet. We weren’t at the time so she asked if we had any questions or if we were happy with the menu (Which was a very nice thing to do and it showed she cared or was at least interested in us as customers). Our meal was DIVINE, well cooked meat (how we ordered it). After we had finished the waitress asked if we would like another drink and again gave us a good rundown of different drinks. We paid up and told the staff that they did an awesome job, they treated us with the utmost respect even though we just walked in, and made us feel valued. I would HIGHLY recommend Detour Bar & Lounge to family and friends. Thanks Brogan ^_^

Visited Whakatane over easter, sat down at Detour and ordered drinks, then ordered meal to be informed of the 15% holiday surcharge. Prices were very high any way $30 – $40 mains. Fair enough to pay the service charge but service was very average the kitchen staff and waitress were more interested in getting together than serving customers. To top it off I ended up paying the bill, 2 times my Amex failed in one terminal and I asked do you take Amex. The waitress said yes and took me to another terminal and it worked. On leaving the restaurant I looked at my receipts and they differed $$5 more on the eftpos receipt, went back to point out the mistake and was told by the waitress(Aroha) that is the surcharge for using the Amex. This was not pointed out at all during the transaction. So I ended up paying a surcharge on the surcharge. Please Detour this place if you are ever in Whakatane as it is a rip off.

We came into town wanting to go to a new eating place as there are a lot of the same sorts of restaurants in the Whakatane area, we were so disappointed with it we only stayed for 1 drink and then left and went to another restaurant to eat. Upon arrival we weren’t greeted so we just went to the bar and bought drinks then browsed the menu. This place is good if you want to drink and nibble but their menu lacks mains choices. You get the choice of 3 types of steaks or a pork belly yawn! After 6pm they have a ‘strict’ dress code but it was 7.30pm when we arrived and it was obvious they don’t push the dress code rule judging by some of the patrons. Once I was finished my drink a girl came and asked if she could take my glass but didn’t offer to get me another then we were completely ignored for another 15 minutes it was very quiet too so we just left. Won’t be in a hurry to go back.
