I do not live in Whakatane but I am a frequent visitor as I have family there. I have been to Peejay’s cafe a lot over the years. At first I was impressed with the friendly service, prices, and the quality of the food. This last visit however, Xmas 2013, I was not so favourably impressed. The staff were SURLY – both the female on the till and the one delivering the meals to us. Neither could muster anything resembling a smile between them. The person on the till stuffed up simple orders – the wrong decaf coffee and the wrong slice- for the table next to us – and no apology or grace offered. In a town where there is considerable choice of cafe to patronise, Peejays needs to up its game.
Hidden treasure here. The staff are welcoming, friendly, the coffees are divine, the food, either from the menu (their Eggs Bennie is to die for) or the cabinet (their inspirational, creative salads)is delicious. Kudos to the chefs, you guys rock. The choice of gluten free sweets is excellent. The coffees are about the best in the Bay!!
