I am from Auckland and have dined at Soulsa a few times since it has been open. I have always had good food, and more importantly good, friendly service from the staff here. How many restaurants are there where the chef personally comes out to chat with the diners (unless you are a celebrity). Not many, if any. That is one of the great features of Soulsa Restaurant. Nothing appears to be too much trouble, unlike Soulsa’s main competition in Whakatane. The food has always been quality, and the kitchen is flexible when it comes to mixing and matching the menu. The duck is superb as is the fish. The ambience, while not flash, is comforting and inviting. On my last visit here, we were accommodated at very short notice, and as the last table to dine before the kitchen closed. The chef did not hesitate to accept our booking. Great stuff!

We went to Soulsa for dinner on Tuesday night as our friends had booked us in as this is the best place to dine in Whakatane. We had the tasting platter for the entree which was divine and I thoroughly recommend everyone try this. For our mains it was so hard to choose as everything on this menu sounds fantastic. I had the fish which was delicious and my husband had the duck which he thought was slighly overcooked but still very good. For dessert I had a glass of port and my husband had the cheesecake which again was incredibly tasty. The staff are excellent and friendly. Quite possibly the best staff I have ever encountered in a restaurant. Our 17 month old son enjoyed all the food off our plates. I would recommend if you are going to Whakatane to go to Soulsa for dinner. An absolute wonderful experience.

Decided to give Soulsa a try, even though the place was busy with most tables reserved, we were seated at the small bar. We had the tasting plate for starter, and drinks. After clearing this away, a table was ready so that we could enjoy our mains. The twice cooked duck with ginger mash was excellent, as was the pork belly. Great service, all of the timings were great event though they had two large parties. Nice to see the chef out with the patrons. No room for deserts, but all looked tempting. Finished the night with a excellent flat white.

We had a fabulous night at Soulsa. How great to go somewhere in Whakatane with all round excellency. We had the duck which was absolutely devine AND the desserts were to die for!!!!!Wonderful service from the staff, lovely ambiance and a lovely personal touch with the chef coming around the restaurant at the end of the night. We eat out often and would rate this restaurant highly. Will be returning for sure!!!!!

WOW – A little bit of Wellington in Whakatane! Awesome first time at Soulsa. Ambience, staff and meal were faultless. The service headed by Sara was polished, the meal created by Jono and his team was perfect. We’re already looking forward to our next dining experience there. Soulsa, after just a few weeks has ‘gone off’. With seeing some diners early in the evening disappointed with no table available, I’m glad we booked. Bon appétit.
