We’ve been missing the Victoria St restaurant so much that me and my wife decided to go to the Riccarton Road restaurant for lunch on Sunday. From the moment we walked in, our immediate impression was the restaurant appears dated, is quite dark inside (even though the sun was out and the lights were on), and generally lacks atmosphere. The dull impression didn’t stop there. I had to walk around and look for a staff member to show us a table. The waitress didn’t look happy to be there, offered no smile, and didn’t exactly make us feel overly welcome. Me and my wife had to swap seats on two occasions as the chairs were rocky and old, and felt like they were about to collapse on us. With only two others in the restaurant besides us we luckily didn’t have to wait too long for the pizzas that we ordered to arrive, and they were quite nice – the usual great tasting pizzas that Spags is reknowned for. Unfortunately the Spags chips were not good. They came out much bigger and fatter than usual, and were not coated in the usual crunchy Spags chip coating. Not sure why. Why fix it if it’s not broken!?! Apart from the Spags fries, the pizzas were nice, very tasty. However, the restaurant itself is a real let down. Lacks atmosphere, modern styling, and the staff just doesn’t look like they want to be there.Apart from the food, the dine-in experience at the Riccarton Road branch is awful in comparison to the Victoria St branch. One would almost think it was a completely different company behind the two restaurants. What I don’t understand is, why the management doesn’t take the opportunity of upgrading and modernising their only other dine-in restaurant in Christchurch while they wait for the repairs etc to be done at the Victoria St branch. They could also do well by providing some essential staff training.

Biggest pet hate is when the food you receive is not what is stated on the menu!!!! Spagilimis on the night we dined you were guilty of this! Dined as part of a group, trying to rekindle childhood memories! We were all looking forward to the baskets of fries with sweet and sour sauce, only to be disappointed when we received plain old tomato sauce.Pizzas were tasty, good amount of toppings and well cooked. Service was a bit of a let down. Had one round of drinks orders taken, then minimal attention thereafter. Had a couple of vegans at our table and a dairy free. Vegans ordered first, no problems there. Dairy free ordered a chicken/meat pizza with no cheese, waitress asked her if she would like hers vegan too! Had to go up to bar after finishing and sitting a good 20 minutes to ask for take away boxes. I understand that sometimes it is nice for wait staff to be discreet, but there is a difference between being discreet and being ignored!

Ate at Spagalimis on Thursday 20 June. The decor was nice and rustic with lovely timber tables and chairs with single candles on each table. We ordered pizza and salad with a kind of fried chicken pieces dish for our nine year old child. The pizza was very disappointing as it didn’t have a traditional Italian base, but instead had a flan like soft, moist, squidgey processed base. The flavours of the topping were ok, but unfortunately the base just crueled it for us. The salad was good and lovely and fresh.

Paid high price for the worst dine-in pizza. For takeway style and quality pizzas we were charged $28 for large pizza, $16 for medium pizza. We had 2 diiferent bottles of BYO wine, my wife had one glass only, but we had to pay ultimate $15 for corkage. Service was terrible as waitresses were busy with take away orders, enterier was dull and felt like fast food restaurant.

The Spagalimis Special Pizza I had was delicious and with lots of toppings! One of the best takeaway pizza places!
