We think Kenzo was one of the first places in Christchurch to offer decent Tonkatsu Teishoku (Pork cutlet set) when they first opened. After returning from a stint living overseas, we have gone back for the first time in nearly 8years. It was a brand new modern restaurant back then, and it still has the nice modern atmosphere. We went there for lunch as we wanted to find a good dine in sushi place to have some more authentic sushi than the shopping mall variety, and we knew Kenzo’s sushi were all made fresh to order. There seems to be plenty of sushi places around now catering to all budgets, but not too many with the right price/quality/dining space/atmosphere mix.We think Kenzo has a lot going for it, and a nice estuary view from the restaurant to boot. There are plenty of authentic sushi on offer as well as sashimi and a wide selection of Non-sushi dishes on the menu Katsu(Crumbed cutlets), Donburi(Rice bowls), Tempura, Udon noodles, Japanese curry etc.We ended up having the lunch special Chicken Katsu set, Gyudon(Beef donburi), Edamame (soy beans), and a selection of sushi – Unagi(eel), Tamago(egg), Tobiko(fish roe). We were pleasantly surprised to find lots of the other patrons having the sashimi. How times have changed!A couple of (obviously) regulars came in while we were there and simply ordered the “usual”.For people living in this part of town, it must be a best kept secret! We will definitely be travelling across town again to satisfy our cravings for Japanese style lunch. It is the closest local substitute we have found so far to our weekly indulgence overseas.

Great Japanese Restaurant, although the location is out of the central city. Portions are not large but decent. Pricing is slightly above average but the food is great and staff are friendly. Definitely try the Green Tea Ice-cream.

It is a busy place. You definitely need to make reservation if you wanna go. Their Japanese meals have more European atmosphere, but overall they are good. I prefer traditional Japanese meal personally. Their service is very nice and friendly!

My wife and I just decided to try Kenzo Restaurant out on a whim, and my word we are glad we did, we had Wakame salad first which was delicious, after this we had some minced pork filled parcels and these were divine, plus the portion size was generous, next we had a selection of sushi and sashimi which was so fresh and beautifully presented, then we had a green salad of extremely finely chopped cabbage, ginger, carrot and orange, yummy! Our rice and mains then arrived, beef teriyaki and pork cutlets, the beef was perfection, well seared and slightly and slightly rare in the middle, the teriyaki sauce was te best we’d ever tasted, sublime, the pork cutlets were coated in light bread flakes and arrived with a spicy sauce and a plum sauce each of which tasted so decadent and umptious, I also had a pot of Jasmine tea which was very delicate and very slightly sweet. In short the food was perfection, we just can’t understand why the place isn’t packed to the rafters with fellow diners, perhaps location? Certainly not the food or the staff as both could not be improved upon, great value too. I will make it my mission to get Kenzo the clientele it deserves, and we will be back, often.

Just had my first experience at Kenzo in Ferrymead today. Awesome! So awesome in fact it compelled me to register a menumania account to write this brief review.Extremely friendly service, very clean and modern interior and above all absolutely awesome sushi (I had the crispy chicken). This makes all the other sushi I’ve eaten before taste like garbage! Seriously mind blowing stuff. Cannot recommend this place enough.5 stars.
