I ordered an iced chocolate, and it was delicious, I’ll give points for taste and presentation, but not for value. I paid about $7 or more for the drink and received it in a reused glass bottle with it only being less than half full with iced chocolate, about 100ml, it might of been less because of the foam. There was a separate glass half filled with ice to pour it into. It took an age for it to arrive, and I was rather underwhelmed. My friend got a flat white and she said it was pretty good.
I went in here today and was very disappointed with the service. The cashier was grumpy and rude, and I asked her to heat the scone I was buying and she rudely said they don’t have heating facilities – despite there being full kitchen facilities out the back?! My two plates of food and two bottles of drink were placed on the counter, no tray, and had to do two trips back and forth as couldn’t carry it all.
Stopped for a small feed and to enjoy the day, it has a beautiful outlook on the botanic gardens and the food we got was really yummy and fresh (even though we got a kids meal).
Ordered poached eggs – one slice toast not buttered and two cold/luke warm eggs that seemed as if they had ‘been waiting’ for a customer; not prepared when required. Hot chocolate was a misnomer – luke warm again. Clean surroundings, good to see staff were given a container to collect up dishes instead of having to balance. But why not also carry around cleaning cloths to wipe down cleared tables – doesn’t take much to prepare for next customers.Aiming I imagine for tourists in particular – so why not some more ‘New Zealand’ type options on the menu?Less restaurant and more gardens issue I imagine; but why are there no plantings around the terrace of this restaurant – after all it is a ‘botannical’ eating place.
Well. Where do we start with this heavenly centre in the middle of the most beautiful place on earth. Average prices; the food is worth a lot more then you pay for it. $19 fro waffles that are worth at least $50. There isn’t a place on earth like it, and trust me, i’ve been to earth. Get your cash out and get down to the Ilex Café for the best experience you will ever have.
Been here about 4-5 times now. Above average prices for average service. Food can range from absolutely delicious (generally the cooked meals) to quite average (salads and cabinet food). The coffee is good and wheelchairs can be borrowed from the souvenir shop part of the building- for free. Bonus!!
It’s in a great spot and the building is absolutely lovely. Considering you’re there to enjoy the gardens then it’s worth stopping in for a convenient coffee but don’t expect to be blown away by the food, drink or service. We didn’t use them but then beanbags out on the grass in the sun looked like a great place to lose an hour or so!
