I love the Janel Coffee Lounge. It’s been around forever and in fact, as a boy in the 70s, I went there with mum and my siblings when we went to Brighton on the weekend. I always had a pie and a bottle of fizz! Janel Coffee Lounge is truly retro – perhaps the only true example like this left in Christchurch. All the others have been destroyed in quakes and are now gone. Janel is wonderfully authentic retro, as are the owners. Eat inside at one of tables, in a window booth, yes that’s right an actual BOOTH, or outside if that’s what floats your boat. The decor is period Kiwiana, all of it! Nothing much has been changed for decades and it’s great! There’s a cafe’ menu, with all the usual goodies, sandwiches, pies etc, and an all-day-breakfast. I usually get a pot of tea, one of their super big filled rolls and a pie. The tea is brought to your nice, clean table by one of the friendly owners and you can have wee chat.
