Shamiana is a good choice when it comes to grabbing some quick Indian food and curries as their meals are mostly pre-made. Taste-wise the place is decent, I won’t say really good but just alright. Some of the curries like the chicken korma, butter chicken and the mango chicken are too sweet for my liking and to be really honest does not exactly have the proper Indian flavours to them. But overall, the place is decent to go grab the quick bite when you’re hungry.
I give this Shamiana a 3 as the food was OK, though it was not up to my standard of perfection. The food was disappointing as the naan bread was dry and the curry didn’t look or taste thick enough which seemed a bit liquidy in my opinion. My advice to anyone looking at buying Indian takeaways is to not buy it from the mall. But buy it from a Indian shop or restaurant that is not in the mall, because it will feel like high quality restaurant food made with love rather than cheap garb.
Now we have tried both of them in Riccarton mall this month. It is easier for us to compare the ground floor one and upstairs one. (base on butter chicken only). The downstairs one overall is better, the butter chicken is sweeter but the rice portion is slightly smaller. The butter chicken upstairs is less sweeter and slightly more salty. However the naan bread is not as good as ground floor one (a bit wet not sure if caused by serving in the bag). I guess we will need to try more to be sure but the ground floor one wins our heart at the moment .
