I eschewed the $10 lunch specials in favour of the steak, egg, and chips. Wow. A humble dish, perhaps, but every element was executed perfectly. My medium steak was genuinely medium, the eggs were runny on top and delish, the chips were great and the beef jus was good enough to drink. There were a few fresh salad-y bits (tomato, onion) to garnish, with a complete absence of that dressing so many places seem to think is necessary. I did not expect this quality of food, especially for $13.50! Quantity was more generous than I expected for a lunch serving.Every element on my plate that was supposed to be hot was actually hot when it arrived, which is something you expect but seldom seem to get. Staff also did not interrupt me two bites in to ask me how I was finding my meal! Music was at a comfortable volume (but that might not be the case when the place is busier).Wheelchair access was fine, no complaints.Hope to get a chance to eat here again before I leave Christchurch.

Went expecting a half decent meal. The place had the atmosphere of a funeral home. The food was quick to come out and the burgers looked good. I had ordered the pork and potato salad expecting actual pork. What I got was sweaty processed pork riblets, the kind that you get from BP connect at 2 in the morning when you can’t feel your taste buds. These rubber like slabs were slopped on top of undercooked potato salad served with burnt bacon and what seemed like half a gallon of BBQ sauce. If someone in future asks me if I want to go The Stock Exchange. I think I would rather stay home and eat my wallet with a side of cold baked beans.

After reading Nigel A’s review I wasn’t sure what to expect.I found the experience amazing, the ladies behind bar were helpful and the meal we had was above my expectations.I will be returning to this bar and I highly recommend this location for a good feed and good service.

I used to love going to the Stock Xchange Bar when it was located in Cashel St. It was cosy, full of character and memorabilia – historic photos all over the walls of various sports stars and music celebrities that had popped in for a visit over the years. The gentleman that ran it was always friendly and willing to have a chat. It was such a great little bar! Then the earthquake hit! However, some months later I was really pleased to hear that it had re-opened in Marshland Road (just around the corner from where I live!).I walked in expecting the cosy-bar theme that existed in the Cashel St premises – but sadly this represents one of the unfortunate stories of the bar relocations. It was obvious that it had lost all of it’s original charm after the relocation. From the moment I walked in, it felt unrecognisable from the original bar. Gone was the cosy discreet feel, and the friendly gentleman that ran the bar. I even ordered some nachos from the menu and the food was ok but very average. I happened to be sitting across the table from some other people who would get up one at a time and grab the microphone and start singing along to the karaoke music that was playing near the stage. Not was I was expecting, a little odd really.Maybe my expectation didn’t help, but needless to say I expected a better atmosphere from a bar that was once renowned for having a classy atmosphere. I would like to assume it changed ownership during the relocation, as it doesn’t make sense to me why the bar is so different from the original. In it’s favour, the bar is friendly enough, the food seems be ok (although I only tried food from the snack bar menu), and it has a big stage for live music.
