I have been going here for more than 2 years, both the food and service are extremely good here. Once we went late night at around 9:30 and the guys over there opened the kitchen just for us. I don’t think this kind of service will be offered anywhere else.
Unfortunately we chose to dine at this place. Arrived for dinner around 6.30 pm. We were the only people at that time. Our table was dirty with grease marks all over it. C’mon guys you could have given us any other table. Windows were dirty, toilets were shocking and there was no sense of cleanliness. Finally got our drinks after 20 minutes and then it took another hour for our food. We would have no complaints if the food was good as we were not in hurry. Nothing was eatable, burnt naan bread, cold curries served in dirty plates. It was a disaster and it was the worst dining experience with laughable service. When we spoke to waiter, the guy couldn’t care less and wanted to see our back asap. I wanted to write a detailed description of our experience but the memory is too painful to recount. Just do not go into this place. Our only regret was that we did not refuse to pay for the dreadful food we were given. We were just happy to get out, learn our lesson and never go back in. We didn’t bother to complain. With hindsight, that was a mistake and one that we will never repeat anywhere else. This site will not let me give it zero star, so I have to give 1 but it is minus 1 .
The best Indian restaurant in Christchurch. Always consistent, great service and fabulous food! We eat here every week, the staff no us by name and our favourite dishes are always consistently great. The meat to sauce ratio is perfect and full of flavour. Whether you dine in or takeaway you are guaranteed a great evening
I really don’t understand the negative reviews!!!! We are from Glasgow and know a thing or two about curry. Indian Sumner never disappoints. The food is exquisite. Ambiance, service and music all compliment the food. Anyone reading the reviews don’t be put off. Go and judge for yourself. There appears to be a common thread to the negative comments that leads me to agree with the other reviewer, it could be the opposition.
Great ambience and friendly staff, but the food was disappointing. I had rogan josh, but it was mainly sauce and very little meat. The taste was like a packet curry, with no freshness or zing. I felt as if I’d been ripped off. The rice was not very freshly cooked either; it had been reheated in a microwave. I could have cooked a better meal at home for a quarter of the price.
We had a pleasant night at Indian Sumner. The food was tasty, however none of us were asked for the spice level we wanted which some of the crew found interesting. No Kingfisher Strong was available (a cardinal sin to some if us). The service was friendly but they seemed to struggle with dealing with a large group.Overall a good night and enjoyable food.
I can completely understand why this restaurant received a one star review. The service was friendly and the music and atmosphere were certainly authentic, however this is where the authenticity ends. The 2 main dishes we ordered tasted identical, contained no vegetables and bore a surprising similarity to ragu with curry powder. I have to add that the naan bread was very nice, however the rice tasted as though it had been pre cooked and microwaved. I was really looking forward to this meal, unfortunately it was the second worst Indian meal I have ever eaten.
