First time to Cooking with Gas, had heard great things about this restaurant and had always left our run to late when trying to book in the past, so our expectations were high.It was a cold night and we were seated by the drafty windows, my gosh it was unpleasant. The fire was lit later but to be honest, it was a little useless, I would suggest a gas mobile heater would be ideal for guests seated by the windows. We all ordered the seafood salad for entrée, it was nice but not outstanding. I had the best main course of venison and it was lovely. The rack of lamb was ordered by two guests and was quite fatty and unappealing. My husband had the duck which he said was chewy and my daughter ordered salmon tail, not only was it extremely unappealing with the black skin, but very difficult to eat. All the mains were served in soup bowls and were clumsy looking. If they were presented in a good sized plate im sure it would have made a difference. The tables were covered in paper, not cloth which I found interesting but a little cheap.Overall, the staff were lovely and very attentive, but if im paying fine dining prices, I expect to get fine fare.Thank you for the experience but I will not return.

Cannot rave enough about the food and service! From the wine selection and amuse bouche to our starter dish of mussels, mains and dessert the portions were generous and the value incredible! My pork belly was cooked to perfection complete with cracklin’ YUM! My husband’s venison was a perfect mid to mid-rare with excellent moisture and flavor. We finished off the evening with the Christchurch Mess (dessert) complete with hokey pokey ice cream- to die for! These Americans were elated at the impeccable timing of service and overall experience! Thanks again 🙂

Had a lovely meal at cooking with gas good food and service until time came to pay. The waiter who was otherwise very attentive overlooked telling us the oyster entree was $50 for 6 oysters . Although they were very tasty would never have ordered them at that price !! Spoilt a. Otherwise pleasant evening. Although when we booked told we had to be there at or before 6pm or we couldn’t be accommodated but when we arrived before 6 quite empty and not full when we left about 7 30 pm

We came here for our anniversary, the atmosphere was so lovely the food was amazing and the dessert the best. The service was exceptional and the staff so friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back.

On our last night in NZ we ‘stumbled’ across Cook’n with Gas and from the moment we saw all of the awards listed next to the front door, we knew we were in for a treat. However the service and food exceeded all of our expectations. The food was amazing – the flounder was cooked to delicate perfection, and the pork belly with extra crackling was a feast for the eyes and stomach. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive to all guests – a level of service you just don’t get enough of these days. Thank you to Cook’n with Gas for making a final night in Christchurch so memorable!

We had the most delicious meal this evening with the friendliest of staff and service could not be faulted. The drinks menu gave such a huge selection it was hard to decide but we eventually chose a glass of sav and Pinot noir. They were superb! The meals were well presented and of generous size. We were very satisfied. This was a lovely way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and we would definitely recommend this restaurant to any one coming to Christchurch looking to dine out. Our only negative comment would be that we sat beside the door leading to the bar outside and the cold coming through when the door was opened was not nice. It did not detract from our dining experience though!!

My husband took me for dinner for our anniversary, the food was amazing, the service was a bit off, we order our wine , but then was told it was not available, so we swapped to another, not a problem , we order two mains and a side of fries, the fries turned up as our entree? We said to the waitress this was wrong that is was to come with our main and she smiled and walked off, mains where amazing and we both really wanted dessert, but we sat and we sat for 26mins trying to get someone’s attention just to get the dessert menu, in the end we gave up and paid. We will be back because the male waiter realised as soon as we went to pay there was a problem and apologised , and that where really short staff that night
