New Regent St up a bunch of stairs and voila a hidden gem. It ain’t cheap, but the food is yum! The place was packed the night a group of us went there. Service was speedy and friendly, meals were turned around quickly. Would go back again,
Gotta give these guys 5 stars. We had three courses there and all were great. Of particular note was the duck pate which was with some really delicious bread and some perfectly balanced pickles. The house bread (complimentary) was also delicious and more’tin loaf’ than bread and appeared to come from the kitchen as several loaves sat atop the pass – which is just a bonus, because the bread was moist, full of flavorsome herbs and just awesome in general. Everything else (steak, lamb, desserts) was just great and we had a really lovely experience here. I’m going all out because there was a totally rude couple who left instead of waiting for their meal while we were there and the staff, who had been completely lovely throughout, handled the situation extremely well. Zomato reviews are completely bunk in general and the platform seems to attract wankers who will mark a place down because they didn’t like the decor or something as ridiculous as a noisy floor, and that’s simply not what I want to see reflected in the score of a venue. The food was great, service was lovely and the atmosphere was delightful and we will definitely go again next time we’re in Christchurch.
On our last evening in Christchurch we were lucky enough to score a table of 15 at this place. The staff were so accommodating to include us despite being told initially that they were fully booked. But they managed to fit us in, and we were so glad they did. Lovely place with a great seasonal menu. I went with the fish and summer veggies. A few went with the lamb. Our food took a little while to arrive, but then they were super busy. When it did all the plates were perfectly presented. My dish was well balanced flavours and could not fault all the accompaniments. The fish was tasty, but was slightly overcooked unfortunately. My neighbour who had the lamb said it was the best lamb he has had; I tried a little and have to agree it was very good New Zealand lamb. We had room for dessert so some ordered the Pavlova and I went with the lemon pine nut tart. All the desserts were beautifully plated and tasted again very good. My only criticism of my tart was that the pastry was a little thick and slightly under, but flavours were excellent. Our waitress was friendly and impressed us at the end with remembering what each of us had, as we all paid separately. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the sentiment from all 15 diners was that “it was the best meal we had in New Zealand!” I think that says it all as we had at several different meals.
Sensational meal, OMG rack of lamb – could not find better in Christchurch. Don’t be put off by the odd entry and (27) steps to the venue. Once you are there it is warm, inviting and the service is great.
I ordered a scallop starter off the specials menu and it was nice. For my main I had the Canterbury Beef fillet and it was lovely and perfectly cooked. My friend ordered the ox tongue and I had serious menu envy. The restaurant was very full and the noise level extremely loud.
