Stopped in here in the early afternoon Saturday after viewing the extremely short-run Tributes of Aroha exhibit at the art gallery. The place was slammed, and down a couple of staff due to illness. We were at the cafe end and the baristas were run off their feet. It was difficult to work out what food was available–I wish lunch menus always gave the hours lunch is served, dinner menus always gave the hours dinner is served, etc. Ordered off the bar menu since it looked like that one runs all the time. I ordered fish and chips, Mum coffee. The food arrived VERY quickly–clearly the kitchen wasn’t as short-staffed as the coffee stations. Mum didn’t get her coffee until I was halfway through my lunch (but it was excellent). Food-wise, the chips were great, the salad very appealing, but there was definite room for improvement on the fish. The batter wasn’t truly crispy, and the fish itself was chewy and a little too fishy-tasing. I think it could have used a wee bit more (or less?) cooking. The long booths are impractical even for able-bodied people, and there’s no room to manouvre between the backs of booths and the people ordering coffee when there’s a queue. But we did find a proper table and the place is apparently huge so there are bound to be other seating options.I hope to return for an early dinner at some stage and hopefully raise the star rating on this review; I don’t think I saw them at their best on this occasion.
Lovely inviting restaurant, well laid out most seats have a degree of privacy. I can’t say I was wowed by the choices I made. In particular, the pork belly was that dry, I had trouble eating it. Unfortunately it came with a peanut sauce which I had to switch out for another. The sauce that accompanied it was a spicy chilli sauce which overpowered the pork. Coffee was great however. My husband had the venison dish which he enjoyed. Our waiter was excellent, he had good wine knowledge and allowed us to try two options which we were impressed with.
