I have been here to eat twice with my partner and the service was good and fast. I got overcharged $46 for a beer, creme brulee and small fish and chips. My partner got overcharged too because I think the waiter got the meal confused with large. The meal filled me up so much the first time I went here I was full when I woke up the next morning.

I have to disagree with all of the other reviews on here! I came in with my partner and our order was taken almost instantly. I got the rib-eye with mushroom sauce and my partner got the lamb shanks. They were cooked perfectly! The meals were HUGE so I had to get a doggy bag to take home with me. Although the restaurant itself wasn’t in a great state, the chairs are low to the ground and are rather uncomfortable. After stating this to the waitress she moved us to another table with more comfortable chairs. Overall i am happy with my experience and will actually recommend all to go here!

A group of four,I have to agree with what has been said below. When we arrived we could hear the chef yelling, The waitress was saying sorry but they were under staffed our meals might take awhile to come. Our meals did take a long time, that was OK we had been warned. The waitress was so embarrassed, about what was out of her control. The meals were horrific. We travel a lot and eat out often I have never felt that I should write a bad review until now. I would say to anybody please do not eat at the Captains Café

Just got home from our horrific experience at the Hotel South Otago. My friend and I both had the mixed grill, it took the waiter far too long to take our order and we noticed the table alongside us didn’t even get offered menu’s and had to go up and get them from the wait staff who were hopeless and uninterested, aside from being grubby and unapproachable..It doesn’t cost anything to smile. The meal was less than average, very basic and greasy and not worth the prices they charge. My onions were still raw, barely cooked and my friends steamed veges were soggy and still had water floating around in the bottom. Also got charged $4 extra for about 2 tablespoonsl of watery tomato sauce. We left feeling dirty and ripped off. Not impressed at all.

Stopped here on our way back through on our travels of the South Island. EWWWW YUCK is all I can say! Deep fried food, dirty dirty cafe and terrible rude staff that need to wash their uniforms!Don’t stop here if you are passing thru this town!

Hideous hideous hideous! raw chicken, staff who dont want to be there, I dont ever remember eating in a more hideous atmosphere. I left severely depressed! eeew. Balclutha resturants need to take a food tour in Lawrence and see what real food is.

The guys need to decide what they are – either charge $25-$30 for a main and get rid of your deep fryer and boxed frozen food and actually COOK something, or drop your prices to the bar meal level, which is what the Captains serves. Orders (or part thereof) are frequently overlooked, with not a hint of an apology from staff – the shoulder shrugging ‘not my problem’ attitude of the staff here needs a jolly good shakeup. If it wasn’t for a severe lack of places to eat in Balclutha, this place would have gone bust a long time ago.
