Visiting old friends for a couple of day in Invercargill and decided we would shout ourselves and have a nice meal out.I really loved the warm atmosphere and the helpful friendly service, the meal presentation was beautiful, I had the salmon and “Yum” full of flavour I couldn’t fault it. I also had chocolate brownie for dessert it was just right crumbing on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside, everyone at the table loved their meals, I highly recommend Emberz.

Invercargill is not the city to be if you want a good vegetarian dining experience.*Today Ella rung up restaurants finding out which had the best offers for vegetarians, eventually we found one that listed about seven options so we made a booking. *When arriving I asked to see a cocktail list, as the book on the table was only wine. Our waitress went looking and came back saying they have ‘gone missing’ so she decided to recite them from memory. That failed as she could only remember two, a pinna colada, and a bloody marry, so she stole the instruction manual from the bar and flicked through the options. *Deciding on the starter that we had been previously told was vegetarian we waited an hour until it arrived. To our horror it was wrapped in bacon. We asked for it to be replaced, and two minutes later it came back again. It stunk of pig, the fat was still on the plate as well as bits of bacon that were still present. So annoyed we told the lady to take it away, and she gave us a free drink.*Then my main came, ravioli. Swimming in water, so I guessed it wasn’t drained properly. It had no flavour and was plain boring. *Ella had ordered two sides (The Portobello mushrooms + grilled vegetables) and specifically asked for them to be on the same plate so it looked like a main meal. It came out and surprise, surprise with was two huge dishes, there was no room left on the table. Everything was covered in buckets of watercress. Obviously the chef’s favourite. *Mum got the pork roast, and as she said the roast was nice, the carrots weren’t peeled properly, and still hard. She wouldn’t complain so ended up paying $28.50 for something she didn’t finish.Ascot hotels Emberz is a horrible choice for a dinner out. Go somewhere better, Like Wellington.

I don’t hand out 5 stars willy nilly and if I could have I would have, but I tend to save those for the really impressive restaurants. We were greeted by friendly staff (thankfully 1 from the North Island even! she spoke my language!!). Staff were attentive, smiling lots. The environment was clean and spacious – albeit a bit moody looking, but that could just be because Invers as a whole is rather moody looking. Especially when overcast. Both my wife and I had steak, each to our own liking. I have to say we were both really impressed. Both cooked almost exactly as we had wanted, although my wife’s seemed to be pushing towards the rarer side. Serving was plentiful and it was delicious as well.Given the place seemed to have a couple of big touring groups, timing wasn’t a problem and the place was still getting tidied and cleaned rather efficiently by waiting staff. If we happen to stay at the Ascot again, we’ll definitely be eating at Emberz again.

  • What?

I often dine at Emberz, as I often stay in the Ascot hotel. Yes, there are better restaurants in Invercargill, but that is not to say Emberz is bad. You get a good, wholesome and filling meal here, and for an acceptable price. I have always found the staff to be professional and friendly. Only down I can say is that they need notice for large groups – 12 of us impromptu seemed to catch them off guard, and service was a little slower than expected (but they did get all 12 meals out together, which is more than can be said for many restaurants I have eaten in)

Had a lovely meal here. Nice and quite surroundings although it has the generic ‘International Hotel Dining Room’ look about it. The Spreads with the Bread were lovely as was the Pork Belly and Hereford Prime Beef Fillet, both melted in the mouth. We also enjoyed the Leek Tart Entree very much. The Smoked Lamb Salad was spoiled by the fact that the Lamb was very tough and the Chocolate Sauce with the Venison was disliked by everyone at our table unfortunately the venison was also over cooked. The desserts were good with the good old fashioned Banana Sundae to dine for! Service was friendly and prompt.

We just dined there last week and what a delight it was from beginning to end. Excellent service, great food, brilliant wine selection. More variety of snacks and light meals would be better still.
