Having read an impressive review in an Air NZ magazine, we headed straight to Hastings for lunch. We elected to eat outside but a sparrow signature on my water glass was a sign things to come. Tis a good idea to check (for those dining outside anyway) that local wildlife hasn’t spent a penny on the table and cutlery etc. Front of House staff were convivial but not co-ordinated one bit. We ended up waiting some time before menus were delivered, followed by a nice Feijoa drink with dry ice. However, this was very out of place as it wasn’t a palate cleanser and I am uncertain as to what purpose it served – other than maybe biding time. We both ordered the slow cooked lamb neck and I had an excited smile when the plates were delivered – the food looked stunning. Unfortunately, everything on my plate was cold. My wife’s lamb was grossly undercooked and the only way that the meat would have fallen off the bone, would have been if it had been coaxed off with a water blaster. Neck is a wonderful cut but it is important to render resident fat and if necessary, provide a jus or something similar to ensure that the hero of the dish (lamb neck) is the predominant flavour. All I remember is succulent meat that tasted like fat. The wine choice was superb. But, the restaurant is disorganised. Clearly, the chef/chefs have talent and I feel that I may need to go back as I suspect that it could just have been a bad day. Fine dining is not just about the food. It is very much about the ‘whole experience’. This one was incredibly disappointing. May I suggest that you chat with Dan at Mr D’s in Napier about how a Front of House should operate as well avoiding having customers wait at the eftpos machine whilst you search through countless pieces of paper to determine the bill. All the best.
Such an experience. My mother and I had a set three course meal and loved every bite. Every dish was a perfect combination of arty and food with a hint of science.
Superb as always.Chef Kent never fails to deliver an exciting meal, with new and innovative ingredients. If you are a foodie, you will love this restaurant for introducing you to exciting new tastes, if you are not, you will still love the meal. They accommodated our food issues (a vegan and one person who didn’t eat any fowl) easily and impressively. The restaurant is one large room, but they are able to satisfy both intimate diners and large groups without them impinging on each other. The room was also pleasantly warm despite being so open.Highly recommended, I never go to Napier without making time to eat here.
