We had dinner here on a Saturday night towards the end of August, having treated ourselves to an overnight trip at The Chateau travelling from Auckland on the Northern Explorer train. The restaurant has undergone refurbishment in recent years (as has the rest of the hotel) and retains its fine elegance, with gracious service, and sophisticated and opulent environment. Not all adhered to the dress code, which is a bit of a shame as we don’t always get the chance to dress for dinner in today’s world, but largely the other dining guests were fairly smartly turned out. Our food was delicious – the honey glazed goats cheese followed by eye fillet with confit potatoes, duck liver pate and broccolini for Husband and the venison with hazelnut spaetzle, snow peas and blueberry relish for me, with a nice bottle of red. A cheese selection and a couple of sticky’s to finish was the perfect way to round out an un-rushed and special evening. Expensive, yes, but lovely.

Recently dined out at the Ruapehu room for a special occasion and whilst we had a fantastic night out due to great company our actual meals were just plain average. There was nothing special about the service, and no staff member made any effort to make us feel welcome. The meals as I have stated were average, and from a table of 8 people we all left feeling underwhelmed. Also disliked how the menu was worded – I ordered the bisque expecting a creamy soup but it wasn’t, I ordered the wild venison and it was farmed, another of our group ordered the dark chocolate torte with crème fraiche and it was a dark chocolate tart without crème fraiche. At $38 for a main I really was expecting to be wowed but left feeling anything but.

For a resturant of this standard, we expected a lot more. Entrees were cold out of the fridge and stuck to the plate, the salmon had a chili sauce and made my wife sick, the waitress got the wine wrong and from then on was grumpy with us.
