Good food let down by slow service.Our sashimi starters took a very long time to arrive although they were worth the wait in the end. The mains were also excellent quality but the wait staff were a letdown. Simple things like forgetting about a desert menu request and then a desert taking far too long to arrive can really let down an otherwise good meal. We ended up leaving before desert arrived.It also cannot be described as a quiet Japanese restaurant by any means. Even with empty teppanyaki tables and only half full, the restaurant was quite loud.
Dinner was always going to be interesting at the Rutherford Hotel after first finding my key wouldn’t open my room, and then after returning from reception with a key that would work … finding someone else already in the room.But that shouldn’t be a reflection on the restaurant. Like most large hotel restaurants, Miyazu is spacious. There was teppenyaki in the middle and further to the edges of the large room were other dining tables. You’re given a hot towel to wash yourself with as well, so that should show the intended atmosphere that they try to create here.Staff were incredibly attentive. Looking through the menu though I felt a bit disappointed. Granted the Rutherford is one of the more upmarket hotels in Nelson so you would expect a more upmarket dining experience, the food was incredibly expensive, offering few choices that would allow experimentation.It did mean that you resorted to eating the usual fare, which is disappointing when eating foreign food. Sometimes you want to try something different rather than just order a bento meal or teriyaki chicken.I did end up ordering the Teriyaki Chicken meal which I can’t fault and for that this place rates highly. Service was impeccable, and if not for the lack of options and the prices on the menu, this place could easily have been a 5. But did my meal warrant the price … Not in my view. I have eaten Japanese just as good at lower prices, so great food and experience but comparably more expensive.
SO GOOD. Although Miyazu was pricey, it was the most delicious Japanese meal I’ve ever had, and one of the best I’ve ever had period. I’m so glad they had a vegetarian bento and that it was so tasty too! The green tea ice cream and fruit afterwards was lovely and clearly home made. If you’re nearby, this place is the perfect special occasion dinner, or even just a great night out. I’m sure that if their vegetarian food was that good, their meat dishes must be spectacular too.
Amazing sushi chef and wait staff, my partner and I sat at the Sushi Bar and could not be more impressed with the quality and calibre of the sushi chef on that night.Ordering a platter and a few of the more unique items, I am not sure I can eat sushi anywhere else. This place has set a new standard for me and all sushi lovers should try the Tarantula Roll or the Dragon Roll.AMAZING
The teppanyaki here is amazing! and the service is excellent! So much fun and a great atmosphere defiantly recommend this place to anybody!!! delicious food!
The atmosphere was great, the service very attentive and the food delicious. The fish was fresh and there was plenty of variety – the best feature was the service from the wait staff to the chefs – all acknowledged our presence even when serving others or at the Sushi Bar or Teppen Yaki. Would dine here again.
