This nice looking Thai restaurant is located in the same street as the Thai restaurant, Golden Bell. Tongtara, however, has more of an upmarket feel and look than Golden Bell. Since entering the premises, I was quickly looked after by warm, very helpful and smiling waitresses. One in particular is to be commended, and her name was Mint. Very rarely, customers are subjected to such a high level of service and hospitality. After I was seated at my table, I began asking questions and they were all answered in a satisfactory manner by the attentive Mint- She even suggested that I take the rest of my meal away if I had ordered a starter and a main, which I did, and could not finish them. I ordered the prawn roll as a starter and the Massaman Chicken Curry as a main. The food was fresh, well cooked and delicious.
There are 3 Thai restaurants on Hardy St but I tried Tongtara as it was the busiest. I ordered the chicken cashew nut (small) takeaway and was looking forward to it after a long day of travelling. Unfortunately, it just isn’t to my liking; bit too sweet and a lot of onions. However, service is very friendly 🙂
Having been in hospo for 15 years, we appreciate the effort that is going on here and commend them for it. The service is a pleasure to experience, with an excellent wine menu that give a hint of what was to come. The flavors and freshness of the ingredients is superb and desert was special. The management should be congratulated for putting together such a fantastic experience. This must be Nelson’s best kept secret as we where two of only a dozen dinners, but can’t imagine it being that way for long. Looking forward to our next visit.
Had a nice lunch for $11. My usual green curry – tofu. Good portion but a bit heavy on the cocoanut cream making a bit too rich. Very nice other wise and good service too.
This place has comfortable seats and polite/attentive staff . We went to celebrate the wife’s birthday and found the food was excellent . Like most Thai places you need to know your way around the menu but we were all very happy and the dishes were described well in English . Thoroughly recommend this restaurant !
We have just discovered this place and were really impressed The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was delicious, (salt and pepper squid was to die for) The best Thai in Nelson in my opinion and we have tried them all… Will be back soon!
