Cool little spot. Good amount of parking. Was nice and clean, we decided not to eat here as we thought it was a bit steeply priced for snacks. My juice was really nice, But sadly no one enjoyed their coffees. Great coffee is lacking in this part of the country, the smallest techniques would improve the quality and keep people returning to this prime location.

Terrible! The worst dining experience of our South Island trip. The staff were welcoming. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The food, however, was very disappointing. The fish of the day was gurnard. One small overcooked fillet, bulked up with a lot of potato. The snapper and chips was unbelievably bad – one small portion of dry, tasteless and very overcooked fish, far worse than anything from a takeaway bar. Would not recommend and would not return.

Best wedges on earth! The vegetarian tortilla stack was superb also. Service and quality excellent. Worth the drive just for the wedges!!My husband and I came across this place spontaneously as we were hungry after our long drive. We were very pleasantly surprised at the standard considering how far out it was. 5 stars!

We arrived in Pohara late and needed food.Penguin Cafe was right next door so we wandered over expecting to get just a basic bar feed. The hostess was very friendly. There were several tables of families with noisy children eating when we arrived and she was quite happy for us to sit down the opposite end of the restaurant so we could enjoy a quieter evening. We ordered our dinners. When they arrived were very pleasantly surprised.I had the vegetarian tortilla stack and my husband had the whitebait patties & salad. The food was superb. It was well presented, very tasty and they catered to our needs beautifully. We finished the meal off with a delectable caramel brownie.Definitely recommend it as a place to return to.

Friendly staff and nice setting. Great muffins and they serve their tea in a teapot! I always like going here

We stopped in here for a meal with our young ladies quite looking forward to a refreshing dinner; the menu seemed varied & was both child friendly & appealed to the pallet. Unfortunately how wrong I could be. We had the market fish with Mediterranean vegetables, Pasta of the day (Blue cheese & Fungi) & the girls shared a gourmet Ham & Pineapple pizza. The Pasta was delicious, well balanced & layered I give them top marks for this however the rest of the meals really let the place down. The Fish was cooked superbly however the fish was over seasoned with lemon rind & you lost the flavour of fish completely, the Mediterranean vegetables consisted of Cauliflower, carrot & I touch of greenery, it was winter mix veg in a light tomato sauce.Go to the supermarket & get a Romanos pre pasted pizza base, some canned Pineapple chunks & some Gilmours ham & youve got a $22.50 penguin cafe gourmet pizza. I am not kidding about the Romanos pizza base, thats what it was. We advised the wait staff of our dissatisfaction & nothing came of it, when it came time to settle the bill we told the manager serving us of how disappointed we were I was told the Mediterranean vegetables were seasonal & subject to change (call them seasonal vegetables perhaps?) & further discussions resulted in little more that uttering you didnt like the fish? & a disgruntled look, no apologies just refusal to accept being called up on poor food.Wouldn’t bother

Great location & setting, food was good but felt wine was over priced. What you could get for $11.99 in the supermarket was $25+ on their wine list.Would still go again tho!
