I’ll admit that I originally only went there because I was intrigued by the reviews, and wow, the reviews do not lie! Service is incredibly friendly and fast, and if you’re in need of recommendations, they’re more than happy to help! The food is good (and very suited to the SEAsian palate), the servings very generous, the variety of choices wide. I will say in particular that I enjoy the picture menu on the side wall, which really gives you a good idea of what you’ll be getting (although beware that looking at the pictures will make you want to order everything). Definitely a place that will make a regular out of you!

I grew up in Hamilton, now I’m a student; I’ve had my fair share of take outs. I think it’s safe to say I’ve probably tried all the takeaways in the uni area. Normally I wouldn’t review a chip shop, but I have a few things to say about New Star. Part of their motto – written on the shop wall – is to always ‘serve with smile’, and they do. No matter what, every time, they’re cheerful and friendly. As a mostly vegan-vegetarian and sometimes gluten free flat, we can be tricky customers, especially as we’re often sharing a single meal. The staff at New Star are not only happy to help us pick out the right food and make alterations to their menu, but they also make excellent suggestions. Everything we’ve had there has been very well prepared, and not just for a takeaway. I’m the only non-vegetarian in the household, and I can vouch for their meat dishes too. It doesn’t look like much from the outside – or even inside, really. The walls are covered in handwritten menus, some of which are entirely in Chinese (which I don’t speak). But New Star is a notch above regular takeaways. Well worth checking out!
It seems odd to give a takeaway place five stars, but this place is more than just a regular takeaway place that sells deep-fried crap. They do sell deep-fried crap, and I’m sure it destroys the cook’s soul to do that, but this place also has the best Cantonese BBQ in Hamilton. Probably not *the* best Cantonese BBQ you can find on this planet, but that’s an incredibly high bar for a place that doesn’t even have tables and charges as little as $9 for a whole meal. The biggest problem for this place, and this is true of some many Chinese establishments, is that *real* food is only listed on the menu written in Chinese. If you can’t find a Chinese-speaking friend to go with you, just get rice with BBQ pork, chicken, and duck—you will be pleased. Perhaps with enough non-Chinese people ordering real food, places like this will start to put some effort into translating their menus.
