We chose this place as it came up on MenuMania as the best breakfast spot in Taupo. I ordered both of our breakfasts and specifically chose my breakfast for the salmon. When it arrived at the table it was bacon, I mentioned it to the waiter, who took it away and got everyone involved, the waitress came over to me and told me that she had bacon on the receipt and that she had repeated it back to me, I told her I had ordered Salmon, so my breakfast came back with the salmon but they had obviously just pulled the bacon off and replaced it with the salmon as the poached eggs were hard and dry. Very disappointed. Had I been a vegetarian and they just swapped it I would have been most upset. Will not dine here again.

We eat at a lot of cafes all over New Zealand, and we’re really picky. This place gets a 9/10 from us. I’ve never taken the time to write a review before but have made the effort here. They got everything right, from the food (we had brunch), to the service and even the ambience. Top marks Piccolo!
Drove over from Napier for the weekend. We walked down the street and decided to stop in at Piccolos for a coffee. Awesome service, fresh looking food. Husband decided to have the big breakfast and I had the filo pastry with salad . Best food we have ever tasted in Taupo, coffee was devine. Everything about this place was top notch. Well done, keep up the good work, we will be back 🙂
The perfect breakfast cafe must balance a varied menu, superb coffee, welcoming and friendly staff, efficient service, acceptable prices, excellent presentation, and that magical X factor, ambience. To me, that means there’s people about enjoying themselves but no one is bothering me a I sit in the corner table (with a street view) typing up this review. Piccolo might just be that perfect breakfast cafe. It seems that way to me. If you’re only visiting Taupo and don’t want to go home and be eternally disappointed with your regular dive, best give it a miss. If you don’t mind having your understanding of what a great cafe should be lifted a little, be sure to visit.
Had lunch on Saturday at Piccolo and the staff were so friendly and the food so good we came back for breakfast on Sunday. I recommend the steak sandwich to die for.
Excellent! We were greeted in a warm friendly manner where the menu was explained and we were shown cabinet food. This is a quiet cafe, no blaring music just a low him of other conversations. The food was excellent and really reasonably priced. The service was excellent. We will be back.
