Very disappointing and well below average lunch. We arrived yesterday at 12pm and were told there was no soup as they had ran out already but the cafe had only just opened for lunch.I ordered the nacho’s which were $16. The mince was watery with no flavor whatsoever and was smothered with a huge greasy mass of tasteless cheese which made the nachos completely soggy. The guacamole was the best thing about the dish which was average and came in a very small serve. The salsa was very sweet and more like a relish or chutney. I left most of the dish as it was so unpleasant to eat. My partner had a mince and cheese pie which was very average, and had been microwaved from the fridge so the pastry was not nice and crispy. The cabinet food looked very unappealing and unfresh. The beer was at least nice and cold. I’m always a little dubious of a place which makes you pay before you’ve eaten and should have trusted my gut instinct from when we first walked in to this place. We won’t be returning unfortunately
The coffee here made by the young women was ok however the service an attitude of the owners are deplorable. We use to be regulars at the Chocolate Pretzel when they made the best scones around but that was 2 to 3 years ago and it has been all down hill for this place since. The owners have been trying to sell for a while now and any goodwill the cafe had must be now non-existent. If they where able to sell the new owners would have to work very hard just to get customers back in the door. Surprising the owners can’t make this connection.
I witnessed an appalling outburst from a man who was serving at the Chocolate Pretzel over the Easter weekend. He was extremely rude to two women with a young child. They came in happy and smiling but delayed ordering as they had to deal with the child. There was no one else waiting. So being busy was not the problem. This was obviously not appreciated by the person serving as he made a rude comment to them. They walked out and I didn’t blame them. My family and I will never return to this cafe. It left a bad taste in our mouths in every way. Pauanui deserves better service than was offered by the this horrid man in the Chocolate Pretzel.
After reading all the bad reviews I had to see what this place was all about. Just had breakfast there on Easter Sunday and being one of the only places open they were very busy but after ordering the big breakfast which certainly lived up to it’s name only waited about 5 minutes for food and coffee was along immediately after which also was very good. Highly recommended! Staff were very polite and owner was very kind
Hospitality Fail!!Went in on a weekday afternoon, nobody else waiting for food.We had an 85 & 90 year old with us and all they wanted was fish and chips, they don’t serve fish, no problem, there is a lovely scollop’s on risotto dish on the special board, could we just have just the scollop’s and fries, happy to pay for full dish? The waitress went out the back, came back and simply said, No! You can have the full dish and a side of fries and push what you don’t want to one side.As walking any distance was a mission, that’s what we had.The food was excellent, service/attitude a total fail so won’t be back.
I went to the chocolate pretzel with my mother on a Saturday morning. It saddens me to say I had a similar experience as other diners here involving a very rude man serving us at the counter. The only actual aspect of our breakfast he seemed to put effort in was in his sarcastic replies to my mother’s questions. Extremely rude and poor service. Avoid at all cost.
If you want the worst coffee ever imaginable and even worse customer service then the Chocolate Pretzel is the place to go. I have just had a nightmare scenario run in with the bald headed owner of The Chocolate Pretzel. It was like something out of Faulty Towers with Basil berating the guests who complained about their dinner.I ordered two takeaway flat whites at 8:30am today and after some time (they were not in the least bit busy) I was presented with my drinks and drove back to our unit. I had one sip and instantly knew it was not right and when took the top off all it I saw was coffee coloured warm milk. Being disappointed I drove back to the Chocolate Pretzel and handed the coffees back and politely explained that these were not prepared using steamed (stretched) milk that provides the creamy rich texture and thin frothy top that defines the drink. I was immediately attacked by one of the staff for questioning what I had asked for and told that a flat white does not have froth, just warm milk. I begged to differ and was virtually thrown my money back and sarcastically told to ‘have a nice day’.On my way back from buying proper flat whites from the Bakery next door (excellent service by the way), I stopped (big mistake!) to explain, again politely, to the owner who was arranging tables outside about my coffee experience thinking that being the owner he would be most concerned that his staff were A) not doing their job right and B) being polite and courteous to the clientele. I was wrong on both counts and again attacked for dare questioning their coffee. I proceeded to explain that knowing a thing or two about the subject that what was I served was a very bad coffee that did not in anyway resemble a flat white let alone taste like one. The owner said ‘you are just lucky you are talking to me about it and not my wife’. I said well good luck mate and moved on followed by a shouted ‘I don’t need your luck or your business’ It was intimidation at its worst and I never experienced anything like it. I hope for the sake of the Pauanui business community that this guy pulls his head in and learns a thing or two about good business ethics ……… but I doubt it.P.S The 5 Star accolades on this review are so obviously contrived.
