This little stonegrill restaurant in the Coromandel Peninsula is pretty underrated, in my opinion. We visited during Labour Weekend – the place was full (fortunately we’d made a booking) and there seemed to be only two waitresses on duty, but service was still friendly and relatively efficient in spite of that. Impressive. Nice views of the Whitianga harbour from the window, also. Our entree of seafood chowder with garlic bread was rather average – fortunately, the mains were much better. My partner and I both ordered the stonegrill, the rump for him and the eye fillet for me. Both were priced at around $30, though the rump was much larger. The eye fillet was still plenty enough for me though, especially as all the stonegrill meals come with a choice of gratin potatoes or chips, and salad or vegetables. Juicy, red, and almost raw, the meat comes sizzling on a hot stone grill, and you can cut and cook it to your liking. My only complaint is that the stone came a tad too hot, so I had to put my fillet on the side plate to avoid overcooking it. Aside from that, though, the meat was tender and delicious, and the smell of it cooking right in front of you is heavenly. We also had two desserts – individual pavlova with kiwi fruit and cream, and chocolate mousse and brownie with strawberries and brandy snaps. Being small and priced at around $13 they were slightly expensive for the quantity, but damn were they good. The pavlova melts in your mouth, and there appears to be a hint of liquor in the accompanying cream. The chocolate mousse and brownie came in layers, the textures of which rivals the gorgeous verrines served by famed Milse. (I seem to have lost the pictures of these, and will update when I find them)I’d recommend this place to anyone visiting Coromandel Peninsula – I was initially hesitant to book it, as it’s rated quite poorly on Tripadvisor, but I’m glad I did. It was a much more enjoyable meal than the one we had at a certain stonegrill restaurant on Viaduct Harbour that shall not be named. kiwifoodie.co.nz
We had the hot stone mixed grill and it was fantastic. Excellent service and chocolate fondant for dessert was worth feeling over full for. The large portions for entree was more than we expected, and would be good for a main if you had small appetite . The house potato was a lovely change from chips.
