What an exceptional place. The garden was amazing, the food was gorgeous, and having a play area AND donkeys for the kids meant a relaxing experience. The spinach and cheese muffins were so lovely even our 4 year old couldn’t get enough of them.
Dropped in for lunch on the way to the beach. This place has been there for many years and is very much worth visiting.We both ordered a vegetable frittata with salad. Was probably the best one I have ever tasted. Well done.The lady (Ruth) behind the till was very good. Her more junior staff need to smile and engage with the client a bit more when they deliver the food. Not too bad though!The seating arrangements are great with a lovely garden to sit in.There is a sort of shop within Colenso also.Well worth visiting.
After being recommended to by a friend, then reading about the award winning cafe, I predicted it was a safe bet to have our final meal on our holidays! I was disappointed. If not for the (dated) reputation, that set an expectation, I may have gone with 3 stars to be fair.* OK/ Average food – bit soggy from microwaving.* 2/4 meals arrived About half hour after the two had been eaten.After investigating twice they finally arrived. Upon asked the waitress what the hold up was, the young girl shrugged and responded, ‘I dunno either’!* Poor service from young waiting staff! English lady on till was very friendly and had a great manner with customers.* Location – nice garden setting and fun children’s playground.* Well stocked shop with some nice pieces, although very over-priced.
Been here twice now, nice setting, fast freindly service, beautifully presented lovely food & coffee/tea. Would highly recommend stopping- we will again.
I read that this cafe was ranked once (not sure who by) as the 2nd best cafe in New Zealand so while staying at the Seabreeze Holiday camp up the road I decided to walk down and give it a try.While the service, coffee, food and decor were acceptable, I selected a lovely looking lamb pie for my meal and watched in mild horror as they proceeded to nuke it in the microwave for about 5 minutes delivering it to me soggy and so explosively, nuclear reactor HOT that I couldnt eat it for about 10 minutes!If they go to the trouble of having good produce – you cant be murdering the food like this and expecting customers to be happy about it. We can do better at the local BP or Shell servo if we want a microwaved pie!! 🙁
I love stopping here after a trip to Whitianga. Such a pretty location and the food is really good. I recommend this place to visitors to the Coromandel as I love the setting and the food is thoughtful and well presented.
A visit to the Coromandel without a visit to Colenso Cafe, for my wife and I, just would not happen. Have been going there for over 20 years – the food is always superb, the service faultless, the coffee always necessitates a second cup. The garden is a joy and the range of goods in the shop should be emulated by every gift shop on the Coromandel. Viva Colenso!
