We visit Taupo annually and always make a point of visiting the Bistro Lago. Our experience has never been anything less than excellent for food and service. It is one of the few places who are consistent, always getting my steak perfect to my taste. There are many extremely good restaurants in Taupo but in our opinion, the Bistro Lago is head and shoulders above the competition. We enjoyed a meal at BL recently and are hoping to book a table for Valentines

Second time I dine at Bistro Lago with family for a special occasion and I must say that on both occasions the front of house staff was very attentive, food presented and tasted great. Highly recommend the Taupo beef eye fillet, my partner had the duck leg and loved it.If you go on a nice sunny day, the view over the mountains is amazing.

Simon Gault attaches his moniker to this pretentious over-rated restaurant beside the Hilton. He is obviously too busy telling up-and-coming chefs how to make the big time to keep an eye on this operation!Dreadful from start to finish starting with the Generation Y barman who did not know how to make the cocktail ordered from the drinks menu. When we went into the restaurant we waited for several minutes. Then a flustered Gen Y waiter waived us over to a table in the middle of the restaurant somewhere as he had to reset another table. The staff rushed around chaotically. The maitre-di was a pleasant chatty fellow but had no clue about how to run a top end restaurant. We skipped the starters as they seemed over-priced. The selection of mains was unimaginative. Fillet steak, chicken, pork, lamb and fish. I ordered the pork. It was tasteless and came with some cole-slaw that looked and tasted like it had come straight from the KFC. My partner had the lamb rack. Tasty but just two ribs for $38. A side of water cress was so drenched in dressing that is all we could taste. Perhaps the kitchen is also full of untrained Gen Ys?Hopeless and never again!

Best restaurant in Taupo by far, therefore prices may not be the cheapest. Would have given this place a 5star, however what lets it down is the breakfast which I find is pretty average when comparing it to other Hilton Hotel breakfasts in NZ.Service for lunch/dinner is very very good – napkin service, and offering a variety of waters to choose from. At a glance the menu does not seem to change frequently, there will always be the usual suspects. However I have not been disappointed.Definitely recommend this place for dinner. However it is best to make a booking to avoid disappointment especially when dining during the weekends misopeckish.com

Dined in a group of 13 so a set menu had been arranged with options . On arrival we were informed changes had been made to the menu , never mind should be OK . I ordered the scallops with crispy cauliflower (2 scallops ) followed by shoulder lamb , how could I go wrong with that ? A lump of grey meat surrounded by a dehydrated puddle of brown sauce / gravy arrived , it was possibly left sitting under a heat lamp . Tasteless , dry , and mostly uneaten . This offering was followed by bread and butter pudding that even the ducks would’ve paddled away from . I noticed glancing around our tabled that no one had eaten much . The ice cream option was left to melt . At this point , with half eaten plates being returned to the kitchen one could expect the maitre’d to show some concern . Alas no ! Our waitress after months of working at bistro lago has never met Simon Gault who,s name is emblazoned on the blurb .It’s time he paid a visit and spruced up the offerings and the service . Love it when he does that on Masterchef . At $80 plus wine we felt cheated and complained . Fat lot of good that did . Good luck if you choose Bistro Lago .

We have just had a beautiful meal at Bistro Largo. I had the pork belly with warm roasted vegetables which was absolutely beautiful and my husband had the eye fillet with steak fries which he could not finish – due to the generous serving! I finished off my meal with the textures of rhubarb which was a lovely ending to a meal, not too sweet, just right. The wait staff were knowledgeable, helpful and unobtrusive and we had a great view from our table by the window.Try this restaurant, you won’t be disappointed.
