We like Thai food and dine frequently at our local in Herne Bay so decided Thai for lunch on a recent visit to Whangamata. The style of service is what you’d expect, but the food! The boss opted for Tom Yum Goong and moi the fried rice. The food arrived but obviously the kitchen had run out of flavours apart from sweetness. The Tom Yum was insipid and sweet and what we’d thought was the lunch time 7.95 dish turned out to be a 20.00 evening meal. Our fault..we’d asked for a larger serving but given the size of the bowl the lunch time serve must be in a cup. My Fried rice was sweet and bland but for 10 bucks..well. Came to pay separately and my $10 dish and 2 glasses of wine at 7.50 each came to $26! The staff were out of there within 5 minutes of us settling up. Avoid

Ive eaten at Nakontong four times over a year and I have not only had the most attentive and yet humble waiting staff attend our table, but have had delicious authentic Thai meals on all occasions. Flavoursome, deceivingly filling and we will be going back again.
When we arrived we received a friendly warm welcome and were immdiately seated and brought cold water. Our orders were taken promptly, food was enjoyable and tasty. There was a young waiter probably 15 or so he was very helpful and friendly. When we wanted to pay it seemed noone wanted to take our money and we did have to wait for a while until eventually someone came and looked after us. Oervall though an enjoyable meal.
The worst Thai restaurant I have tried in NZ. Nearly 20 minutes just to have our drink orders taken, there were young children no more than 12 waiting on tables, and the food when it eventually came was tasteless and bland. The vegetables appeared (and tasted) from frozen.
